Juvenile Hurling 2015

Gort Inse Guaire

Introduction
The Gort Juvenile GAA officers operate as a subcommittee of the senior club and
remain proud of their achievements down through the years. The Juvenile Officers of
the club firstly wish to acknowledge the unrelenting commitment of the parents of all the
panellists, without which, success within the club simply could not be achieved. It is you
the parents who have enabled the coaches and mentors to work with the inspiring
young hurlers who have brought the club such joy as we watch their skills and
athleticism improve month on month season after season and achieve feats that make
parents and club supporters so so proud.

Juvenile teams
U-16
This years U16 team are in the C grade this year and are already underway with their
county championship campaign. With a young panel this year they have two victories
recorded from the opening three rounds played to date. The team have now secured
qualification from their group to the latter stages of the competition.

U-15
This years U-15 team are in the A grade and their competition doesnt commence until
later in the calendar year but this panels members are all in action under the guise of
the respective U-16 and U-14 competitions. They would hope to build further on their
progress made last year when they contested the U-14B county final in Pearse
Stadium ensuring the team climb a grade this year whilst also reaching The Justin
Cheevers Feile semi-final last year

U-14
This year sees our U14 squad already underway in the B grade in the county
championship and have almost completed the group stages of the championship as we
speak with a fair degree of success and hoping to reach the latter stages of the cup
competition in the grade as well as partaking in Feile na Gael following on from the
success in winning the county title at u 13 B1 last year. The club extends its
congratulations to the management team of Eoin Marren, Paul Killilea, and Colie Roche
on their brilliant win last year in the county final bringing back the silverware to a proud
club, and to be forgiven for some carbon emissions as the fires of glory took hold all
around the town to welcome home our young heroes from Ballinasloe with county
medals in their pockets. Whilst Paddy Joe might need a course in traffic management
and a reminder that one road cone might just not be enough to stop the platoon of cars
full of team members and parents outside his house whilst he took a celebratory toast
of champagne to celebrate the victory from the Tierneevin side of the house, all was
forgiven on the day.
The club extends every good wish to the team in this years campaign and look forward
to supporting them as the campaign develops.

Our U-12 hurling team for 2015 returned to training in late March, the main competition
for this age group is the u12, 13 a side league which runs from mid-May to the end of
July.
With a very young panel and limited numbers the main emphasis is on development for
this year while also being competitive in the league and other club competitions.
Thus far they have played a number of challenge matches and this very skilful group
have performed very well.

National schools
After interview process it can be confirmed that Wayne Walsh is now the schools
coaching officer following on the sterling work of his predecessor Micheal Cummins.
Wayne will provide coaching and mentoring for the pupils of the five national schools in
the parish. This job title cannot be under estimated as part of our success going
forward as a club as it is the link forged from each child to the club and also is integral
to assist the great work done already in our feeder schools by volunteers including Stan
Cahill, Padraig Linnane, Matt Murphy, Brian Brennan, Eoin Marren and teachers alike.

National schools competitions;-. Includes Garda Blitz, Mini 7s, and national schools
championship. Over 60 boys and girls competed in our national school competition last
year with success for the Gaelscoil in winning a county hurling cup

Christy Monaghan tournament;-. This is ran annually in Gort, aimed at boys ranging
from 2nd to 6th class from our feeder national schools" and hosted by The Monahan
Family in honour of the late Christy Monahan who was a key player with Gort in the
eighties and a team member of their county success in 1983.

Brendan Linnane Tournament;- (U 14). In honour of the late Brendan Linnane who
hurled in the seventies for his home club Gort and later for The St. Gabriels In London
( a strong Galway based club there to this day)
Underway this year with Gort through to semi-final stage at time of print. This year has
seen the expansion of our very own U-14 tournament, always noted as a high quality
straight knock-out competition for South Galway teams. However after considerable
thought it was concluded better to provide a guarantee that each team get two quality
matches at an early stage of the year when games are valuable in preparation for the
championship. Thus, a new format emerged incorporating more games and teams. We
now have a shield and cup competition in place whereby if a team lose their opening
match they are in the Shield section and if they emerge victorious in the opening round
they are in cup semi-finals. This years participants are Ardrahan, Kinvara, Micheal
Cusacks, Ballindeeren, St. Thomas, Craughwell, Clarenbridge and the hosts Gort. All
games are played in Gort and were of a very high standard with the best hurlers of
south Galway on view. As we go to print the concluding stages of this noteworthy
tournament are being played out. However, The final is scheduled to be part of our
festival on our official opening weekend.

Fund raising/sponsorship and nights out
During the course of 2014 many parents got involved to help out with fundraising for
Juvenile hurling, while many Mums helped out in providing excellent food and
refreshment catering for home matches. The fundraising included a successful and
enjoyable night out at the dogs and overall enabled outings for away tournaments to
take place and by extension served to help to improve competitive edge for the hurling
participants.
The food and refreshments provided were very welcome and helped many parents,
supporters and visitors alike to get to know each other in a relaxed setting after
matches and in a true spirit of community friendship.
The Juvenile club wishes to thank its sponsors, DH farm Machinery, Natus
Manufacturing Limited and Wills Bros Civil Engineering Contractors for their valued
support during 2014, and also a sincere thanks to Peter Minahane and Fiona O Driscoll
of Minahane's Supervalu supermarket for their sponsorship of the sports equipment
provided to the Gort Juvenile club and to Coole Garden Products for their provision of a
set of team kit for Kiltartan NS.
