Objective:
The course objective is to provide students with solid statistical base for use on daily basis as
well as at work.
Material to be covered:
Descriptive Statistics. Probability Distributions. Sampling and Sampling Distributions.
Estimation Techniques. Hypothesis Testing. Regression. Variance. Nonparametric
Statistics. Goodness-of-fit.
Course outline:
Students should gain knowledge of the main ideas and methods in descriptive statistics and
interference statistics. Also, develop skills to solve practical projects within statistics on a
piece of paper, in computer, and interpret the results of statistical research.
Reading material:
The course book is Statistics for Business and Economics, (5th Ed). Paul Newbold, William L.
Carlson, and Betty M. Thorne.
Week 36-39: Chapter 4, 5, 6 and 7 (Probability).
Week 40-43: Chapter 8 and 9 (Inference).
Week 44-46: Chapter 10 (Regression), 15 (Variance), Chapter 13 (Nonparametric Statistics),
Chapter 14 (Goodness-of-fit).
Week 47-48: Overview of previous Chapters.
Supplementary reading:
Oxford Dictionary of Statistics by Graham Upton, Ian Cook, Graham J. G. Upton.
Course evaluation:
Homework: There will be three homework assignments during the semester. These will
account for 30% of the final grade.
Students should solve their homework on independent bases and hand them in to the
teaching assistant at the beginning at the discussion classes at the end of week 39, 43 and
46. Students must pass the final exam, for homework grade to be accounted for in final
grade.
