Helga: Really?
Jenkins: They were written by another
playwright of the same name!

Edmund: Shakespeare wrote shameless
potboilers. Thats why he called them As
You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, and
What You Will...
Stone: Are you denying the genius of
Shakespeare?
Edmund: No, I am only saying that in
the theatre, genius is often wedded to a
mountebank.

eter (a playwright):
I wrote my first
play in high school. The Life of George
Gershwin. I got all my information from the
back of record jackets. In the first scene, young
George got thrown out of a music publishers
office. The secretary consoled him and shyly
confessed she was a budding lyricist. Whats
your name? George asked her. Ira, my
first heroine said. I think my career has been
downhill ever since.

man has just moved into the neighborhood and visits the local pub
for the first time.
Soon he hears someone yell out Number 23, for apparently no reason but
its followed by a roar of laughter from
around the room.
The newcomer asks one of the oldtimers whats going on. Well, its
like this: weve all been coming here
for years, and we know each others
jokes. A while back we decided to
put together a numbered list of our
favorites, so that all you have to do is
call out the number and everyone can
remember it and have a good laugh.
Thats great! says the newcomer. Let
me see the list and try one out. He
looks at the list, chooses a favorite, and
shouts out, Number 11!
There is a deathly silence, so he bravely
tries again. Number 11! The silence
continues.
Why did they laugh at 23 and not at
11? he asks the old-timer.
Well, you see, explains the older man,
it isnt the joke so much as the way
you tell it.
