Description of Course of Study

Our diploma course (400 hours) is an academic
course with a compulsory examination and
practicum component.
It is the optimum choice for the career seeker
wishing initial entry into the profession, as well
as for those already in the profession, seeking
employment with others, or planning on self
employment, and who feel they would benefit
from the expanded breed specific grooming
instruction and supervised practicum experience
associated with this program.

If, on the first try, a student does not achieve a

passing grade on lesson testing, one re-test is
allowed at no further charge. Any subsequent retesting is charged at $35 for each re-test. Should
a student not achieve a passing grade on final
examination, a re-exam fee of $35 will apply.

Practicum
There is also an extensive practicum component
to the diploma course where the student will
have lots of hands on skill development.
Photographs or videos of practicum work will be
graded and constructively critiqued by your tutor,
and will form a significant portion of each final
grade.

Testing & Examination

At the end of each self study module, online

testing must be successfully completed. In
addition, a comprehensive online memory exam
must be successfully completed. There is a one

The Academy
JKL Training Academy was established in 1975,
and has offered professional groomer training in
the distance learning format since 1980. JKL
operates strictly within the guidelines of the
Private Career Training Institutions Act of British
Columbia which requires the highest standards
for student care and protection.
Thousands of students have been successfully
trained through our courses, and many have
been consistently working in the industry since
their graduation. A strong members network has
evolved from our students and grads. A good
example is our Online Member Message Board
H

where veteran grads and beginner students alike

share information.

After having worked

in the pet industry
on a part time basis
since 1966, I made
the transition to a
full
time
career
devoted to pets in
1975.
For fifteen years I
Joy Waters
owned and operated
Vancouver Islands largest pet care centre,
Joyland Kennels Ltd., where approximately five
thousand dogs and cats visited yearly for the
services provided. These services included pet
boarding, grooming, training, breeding, retail pet
shop and wholesale pet food and supplies. During
that
time
I
developed
and
instructed
comprehensive programs in professional dog and
cat grooming.

FAQ
How can I learn grooming without the hands

self motivation
career focus

Simply put, you can't! However, there are

several
proven
and
practical
hands
on
alternatives to the high cost of academy
attendance, provided you have the maturity,
confidence and focus to plunge right in!

The vast majority of JKL graduates are

successfully employed, some for nearly 25 years
now! They were great candidates for distance
learning, each one determined to attain a specific
career goal.

The successful distance learner possesses high

levels of the following traits:

Is a JKL diploma a recognized qualification?

self confidence
resourcefulness

17

Yes, upon successful completion of any of our

diploma trade program, a graduate would be
qualified to work in virtually any country in the
world. Unlike some other trades, professional
grooming has

very little federal regulation at this time and

therefore may be practiced by anyone.
Those who obtain professional training with a
certified training institution such as JKL indicate
to their peers and to their clientele a strong
professional dedication.
After
successful
completion
of our course
you will become a JKL certified professional
groomer, and may use the letters DPG after your
name.
After graduation a certification logo will be
provided for use on your promotional materials
and at your website.

to time, (even to the seasoned professional),

careful study and thorough comprehension of the
program materials, will help ensure mistakes are,
at worst, minimal and at best, nil.
Generally, our students comment that making a
mistake is not usually a problem, but difficulty
perfecting a specific procedure or technique may
happen from time to time.
Pre and post educational member support is
available toll free, online and via email. As well,
our member network, which includes veteran JKL
graduates, is a great resource for our 'groomers
in training'.

Are tools and equipment included in the

program costs?

How long will it take me to complete a

JKL program?

Our diploma course has a six month maximum

completion time, with an additional six months
granted, at no extra cost, for those who need the
extra time to complete their practicum.

Do you accept international students?

Yes, international and offshore applicants may

enrol in our courses in their online formats. A
working knowledge of basic English and writing
skills is prerequisite. International orders may be
made via PayPal or credit card.
Who will correct me if I make a mistake while
practicing?

No. Because we try to keep tuition costs for all

our groomer training programs as low as
possible, and because not all students require
tools and equipment at the very same stage of
their program of studies, we include no tools or
equipment.
A link to a wholesale tools kit supplier is provided
for those who wish to purchase their tools all at
one time. We also provide a detailed name brand
professional tools and equipment list and a
wholesale suppliers list to help our students
make the very best tool and equipment choices
relevant to their individual needs.

What about grooming videos or DVDs?

Videos or DVDs are a great way to visually

reinforce the learning process, although not

Although mistakes can and do happen from time

18

Do I need to have access to a computer to

complete this course?
necessarily the most convenient or optimum
learning tool as 'stand alone' trainers. It can be
awkward to practice what you're learning while
actually viewing them, (start-stop-start-stop), so
multiple viewings before beginning practice are
usually necessary to retain all the visual and
verbal instructions.
However, videos or DVDs used to accompany a
solid groomer training manual with plenty of still
diagrams, illustrations and photographs can be
an asset to the learning process.
Grooming videos or DVDs are included with our
diploma multimedia format, and are available for
purchase at any time to all JKL Members.

Yes, at the end of each lesson, online testing

must be successfully completed by all students.
As well, a comprehensive online memory exam
must be completed prior to issuance of trade
school diploma.
All students should have access to a computer
and the internet in order to take advantage of all
JKL member benefits.
For students enrolled in our multimedia or online
formats of the course, an internet connection
required to access course lessons online.
