Mental Math & 10 Frames

Whole Group: Number Talks

Hold up card for a few seconds so all students get a quick look. Pick on a
student to answer and verify the right answer by counting the answer from
the card.
Have them raise their thumb when they know the answer
Can be used for lower/higher elementary
For older grades hold up a problem such as (15+27, 456+754). Students
raise their thumb when they know the answer. When a student knows a
different way to solve then have them raise one finger per strategy.
Have student solve the problem on the board and explain their thinking;
this helps other students acquire new strategies.
*Free ten frame cards for number talks & Rekenrek Cards

Activities
Count out the class using 10 frames
Centers: play matching dice numbers to match
actual number (pink matching picture above)
Centers: Sort counting strategies by
number (Picture to the left).
Centers: Playdoh mats make the number

Individual Work:
Have them work with a 10 frame out of
popsicle sticks (picture) to solve problems
such as I have 8, how many more to 10?

Addition & Subtraction

Group Activities
Fact families/Cumulative Addition:
children make number sentences in
groups with construction paper & string
Adding in groups at desks

Addition & Subtraction Centers

Centers & Activities

UNO: Flip two cards to add/subtract (or even

multiply) as students write down their totals onto a
worksheet to turn in. UNO math to make ten; flip
two cards (with or without a partner) to make ten.
Drop the Amounts and ADD or SUB. with a bucket
and two cups
Math Flashcards with unifix cubes or pipe-cleaner
with beads
Math with Playing Cards: set up a template and
have students match a card to find the answers.
Cavity Teeth: Color in the number of teeth when
subtracting
Add up the totals of the food (great for decimals)
Clothespin clip Chart: clip to the answer
Find the Sum game: Add up the number of dice to
the values below the chart
Watercolor Fun: write the answers in a white crayon
and find the answer with watercolor paint
Story Math: Dr Seuss story One fish Two Fish
Domino Math: add up the two faces to find the sum
Popsicle sticks: add up two different colors to find the
sum. Write down the math facts onto worksheet to
turn in.

ART INTEGRATION: use

a xylophone to add/sub key
notes while playing a musical
melody. Link provides many
instruments that can be used

other reward in a box, and students have to figure
out how to walk to that specific box to get their
treat!

Ideas:
-Speed dating (exchanging math problems) in the
math classroom.
-Fill a jar with word problems, kids pull out a
problem, solve it in their math journals
mathematically, and then writes why they chose to
solve it that way

-beat: 8beat dance
-moves: slide, turns,
-patterns: AB-ABC and repeat
