The Greek states often fought each other.

SpartaandAthensfought a long war, called
the Peloponnesian War and Sparta won.
Only the threat of invasion by a foreign
enemy made the Greeks forget their
problems and fight on the same side. Their
main enemy wasPersia.

shields and long spears and had bronze helmets
and leg guards.
Ahoplitehad to pay for his armour, unless his
father was killed in battle. Then he was given his
father's weapons and armour.
Rich men had metal armour, but others wore
cheap armour made of linen cloth.
The crest was usually made of horsehair, and
stuck up to make the soldier look taller and
fiercer.

Food and Drink:

The Greek diet was very healthy. Food in

Ancient Greece consisted of grains, wheat,
barley, fruit, vegetables, breads, and cake.

Buildings
Architecture is the art of designing and
creating buildings.
Greek architecture was based off of the
post-and-lintel system. The post-andlintel system is made up of columns,
which are large upright posts, with a
roof, over the top.

colourful fabric were used to

clothingfor men was a
tunic, called a chiton. These

`Family Life:
Men had a much better life than women in
Ancient Greece. Only men could be full
citizens and make the important decisions.
Only men could take part in battles, war,
sports and meet in public.
Spartan women had more freedom than
women and girls living in Athens. Women
were expected to look after the home, make
clothes, and bear children. Their fathers
chose for them who to marry.
Rich families had male and female slaves.

Greek Mythology:
In their effort to understand their environment
and the forces of nature, the Ancient Greeks
invented stories to account for the things that
went on in their lives. These tales, known as
myths, were spread around by travellers.
What were the Myths about?
They were about gods who controlled the
elements of nature. The myths told tales
about powerful Olympian gods, sea gods,
woodland gods, sky gods, underwater gods,
half-gods, human heroes, courageous or
