Bengali: Bengali Words & Phrases Page 1 of 2
In Kolkata the primary language spoken is Bengali, also known as Bangla. Before
departing for India its a good idea to get some vocab it particularly helps when
teaching children as you will find that some have no English at all. Best thing to do is to
get a teach yourself book or phrasebook. I know Rough Guides have a miniature
phrasebook (lots of the dictionaries, especially the ones available in Calcutta, translate
straight into Bengali script which means that you need a phrasebook). But for people who
are here for longer periods I would recommend Teach Yourself Bengali by William
Radice available from Amazon. This website might also help but some of the
pronunciations are a bit funny!
