5. Beliefs and Instincts

At this point, the basic frame work of the monster has been
described. And there is an overall concept for him, but we
still dont know exactly what he does. Beliefs and Instincts
help narrow the concept and focus it into a playable entity.

Instincts

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Beliefs
We know what hes all about, but what makes him tick?
What goes on the monsters head? More importantly, why
is he here now? Whats his reason for being here? How will
he be involved in the story? Note the creatures three beliefs:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. Skill Questions
Now we know the monsters traits, his stats, how he reacts
and what he believes his role to be. Time to get down to
brass tacks and decide exactly what the monster does.

Occupation
What role does the monster play? Is he a hunter, a
guardian, a scavenger, a forager, a tool-user, a tool in itself
or something else?

Type of Skills
How does the monster fulfill his role? List four or five
general ways the monster gets on with life:

Determine what actual skills your monster possesses, use

the Character Burner skill list as a guide. Define the general
ways a monster interacts with his world in short, easily
digestable terms. Use the Skill Burner section for guidelines
on creating your own skills.
Skill

What does it do? What does it absolutely need to know

or do to survive? How does it do it? Note three Instincts

7. Steel Questions

8. Trait Burner

Monsters start with a B3 Steel, like everyone else. A

monster may spend five yes answers to acquire a Gray
steel, no questions asked.

Using the trait burner worksheet, apply mechanics to the

answers given in step 3. Trait Questions

Is it in the monsters nature to crush, kill, destroy, maim,

rape and pillage? If so, raise Steel by one.
Has the monster ever been severely wounded? If the
monster is a killer, raise Steel by one. If the monster is
not a killer, lower Steel by one.
Has the monster been tortured, enslaved or beaten
terribly over time? If yes and his Will is 5 or higher, raise
Steel by one. If no, and Will is 3 or lower, reduce Steel
by one.
Is the monster murderous, innured to death or
particularly bloody-handed? If so, raise Steel by one.
Has the monster lead a sheltered life? One free from
violence and pain? Reduce Steel by one.
Has the monster been raised in a competitive (but nonviolent) culture? If so, raise Steel by one.
If the monster is a mother and has given birth to a child,
raise Steel by one.
Is the monster particularly emotionless or remote? Raise
Steel by one.

Experience of Monster

If the character is Gifted or Faithful, raise Steel by one.

What kind of experience does your monster have? Is he

a young pup? or an aged veteran? Perhaps hes old, but
never tested? The call is yours, but use these guidelines:

If the Will stat is exponent 5 or higher, raise Steel by one.

Monstrous Magic Burner

Any trait that affects another character, be it influencing
or damaging, is described using the Monstrous Magic Burner
rules.

9. Peer Review!
Not so fast buddy! Where are you going with that White
Speed? There are three kinds of monsters that one can
develop in BW, those for use by the GM, for use by a player
or to use as a template for character stock. Each its own
review process:

GMs Monsters
The GM is not obligated to reveal his secrets to the players,
what fun would that be. However, he must, upon request,
tell his players in public the totals of his latest creations
Stat, Trait and Skill points. Players can then complain by
comparing those totals vs their own characters.

Player Monsters
If a player designs a monster to be used in game as a
character, there is a two-step review process.

1. Players get first look

~3-4 skills

If the monsters Will is B7 or higher, raise Steel by one.

The players as a group may approve the monster and

pass it to the GM. Or they may do one of the following:
reduce one stat by up to two points, nix one trait or reduce
up to three skill points.

Possible descriptors: Focused, untrained, young, or

stupid

If the monsters Forte is B6 or higher, raise Steel by one.

2. GM gets Second Look

3-14 skill points

~4-6 skills
Possible descriptor: Limited experience, beginner,
skilled youngster
15-19 skill points

~5-7 skills

If the monsters Perception is B6 or higher, raise Steel

by one.

7b. Other Attributes

Mixed shades: add two for each gray-shaded stat, three for
each white. Final actual shade is always the darkest shaded.

Reflexes

Possible Descriptors: Trained, professional, kick-ass

Average of Perception, Agility and Speed.

20-24 skill points

Mortal Wound

The GM may: +/- 2 stat points. +/- 3 skills. +/- all

skill exponents (never below root), and remove or add a
trait. He may also alter shades as he sees fit. The GM may
make strong suggestions regarding the monsters Beliefs
and Instincts. However, he may not alter the monsters
concept.

Veto
If all of the other players and the GM deem a creature
to be unsuitable for their game, then the may veto the
creature in its entirety. The designing player cannot use
that creature in this game. If he so desires, he may
redesign the creature to better suit the needs of his group.

Possible descriptors: Experienced

Average of Power and Forte plus Mortal Wound base

determined by stature.

25-29 skill points

Health

Character Stock Monsters

Average of Will and Forte plus answers below

These monsters undergo the same review process as for

Player Monsters. However, be sure to review the beast twice
in this case, once before hes been through the Lifepath and
Age burner, and once after. It keeps players honest.

~8-10 skills

~9-13 skills
Possible descriptors: Veteran
30-39 skill points

~12-16 skills
Possible descriptors: Highly experienced
40-50 skill points
