Line

Has no start or end points.

Line segment

A piece of a line; joins 2 points.

Ray

Has a starting point but no end.

Vertex

A corner.

Angle

When two rays meet at a vertex.

Acute Angle

Measures less than 90o.

Right Angle

Measures exactly 90o.

Obtuse Angle

More than 90o but less than 180o.

Straight Angle

Measures exactly 180o.

Equilateral Triangle Has three equal sides.

Isosceles Triangle

Has two equal sides.

Scalene Triangle

when it is turned.

New Unit: Geometry

There is lots of important vocabulary to know
with Geometry. Chances are that you already
know most of it! See how well you can match up
the vocabulary words with their descriptions.

Now, lets do some practice with measuring accurately with a

ruler and using a protractor.
Try these:
1.A triangle has one 120o angle.
a.What type of triangle might it be?
b.What type of triangle can it not be?
c. What could the other 2 angle measurements be?
2.A triangle has one 60o angle.
a.What type of triangle might it be?
b.What type of triangle can it not be?
c. What could the other 2 angle measurements be?
3.Look at the words below. What combinations of two
words can be used to describe the same triangle? Draw
and label triangles to prove your thinking.
acute, obtuse, right, equilateral, isosceles, scalene

Make the following triangles in your notes.

*Be sure to measure all side lengths and label

using cm.
*Be sure to measure all angles using a
protractor and label using degrees

1. right triangle
2. acute isosceles triangle
3. obtuse isosceles triangle
4. equilateral triangle
5. scalene triangle
What do you notice about the properties of
these triangles? Be sure to comment on the
side lengths and angles.
