Systems of EquationsChange of

Variable and Larger Systems

An example of change of variables:

Consider this system of equations:

2
3
y 2 10 2 y 2 21
x
x

This does not look very easy does it? However, lets make the following changes
and substitutions:

A
Let

1
x

B y2
and

. Now after we substitute our system will look like this:

2 A B 10 3 A 2 B 21
WE have already learned four ways of solving a system like this. I will just state the

( A, B) (1,9)
answer:

Thus

1
1 x 1
x

( x, y ) (1, 3)
Solve the following:

3 2
1 2
16 8
x y
x y
1.

3 x 2 2 y 2 11 4 x 2 y 2 0
2.

2 x 3 y 19 3 x y 11
3.

4.

1
3
4 y 8 2 2 y 14
2
x
x

y 2 9 y 3
and

. Therefore

With these larger systems you are expected to solve this primarily with technology,
your calculator and your computer. However, you should work some of these with
algebraic methods. There is a very good Power Point showing how to do this with
the Gaussian Method.

x y z 6 3 x y 2 z 7 2 x y 4 z 16

2 x y z 22 x y 2 z 11 2 x y 4 z 15

The following are problems to be solved using technology after you have obtained
the equations:
10.A cinema sells three types of tickets: children, adult, and senior. They sell for
4 euros, 8 euros, and 6 euros respectively. For the afternoon film, 50 tickets
were sold creating a revenue of 316 Euros. Half of the tickets sold were
adult tickets. How many of each type was sold?
11.My wallet today contains three types of notes, 5 Euro notes, 10 Euro notes
and 20 Euro notes. I have a total of 17 notes with a total value of 205 Euros.
The number of ten Euro notes is equal to the number of twenty Euro notes.
How many of each note do I have?
