CLIENT’S GOALS
The design intent is to recapture within the naturally harsh
environment of Saudi Arabia the sense of place imbedded
in the name, ‘Riyadh’ which derives from the word: garden
or paradise. Pedestrian connectors, by way of a light-rail
line link a central plaza garden to a series of defined
outdoor spaces and gardens set within each of the separate
campus districts. Located at intersection the two major
pedestrian connectors and defined by the surrounding
colleges, this central plaza forms the heart of Academic
District.

The Medical District comprises the largest district which

includes a 200 bed Adult Specialty Hospital, a 350 bed
Children’s Hospital and a series of outpatient clinics.
Pedestrian bridges and covered drop-offs link an elevated
landscape medical plaza atop public parking to the medical
complex entry lobbies.

Overall campus wide strategies for LEED directed the

landscape and urban master plan with the pursuit of Gold
certification for the Research Center within the Technology
District.

Sustainable features include:

• At minimum, one building is to be certified on each
CAMPUS MASTER PLAN campus, preferably to Gold level.
• Al Hasa academic campus is targeting certification in
totality, with mosque.
• Projects pursuing LEED Certification strategically
identified to represent the variety of typologies, campus
dispersion, and readily certifiable projects/designs.

DESIGN
As with the campus design, circulation, both horizontally and
vertically, establishes the template for the design and building
configuration. The first four ground floors form the diagnostic and
treatment chassis that support the upper bed tower floors. At the
lower levels the floor plates pull apart and recede at the upper
floors, which allow for pockets of space and natural light to filter
down to the lower levels.

At the lower levels the building configuration serves to shield

much of the sunlight at the recessed lower levels. Along the
perimeter of lower floor chassis the exterior takes on a much more 15
solid expression. The upper floors of the bed tower hover above an
interstitial mechanical service floor take on a lighter expression
shielded by a combination of fritted glazing combined with
sunscreens.

The patient floors are composed of demountable glass and

solid partitions that will serve as canvases for branding,
storytelling and wayfinding. This is currently being developed
by Branded Environments. The core walls of the unit control
equipment and distractions and provide simplified views from
the patient areas.

Patient room furniture and nurse stations are developed to be

a kit of parts made from fiberglass reinforced plaster and

concrete, all of which are local materials.

The patient room’s color and pattern on ceiling, floor and

walls are controlled by the patient, allowing for a positive
distraction during the healing process. The footwall features
a video screen that displays the patient’s artwork.
