Standardized Testing

WHAT IS IT REALLY USED FOR?

WHY GIVE STANDARDIZED TEST


It focuses on efforts of educators about the students making
mastery on important subjects.
Testing provide educators with crucial intelligence about the
needs and abilities of students about the performance of
academic programs.
Some may say it provides students and parents with useful
feedback regarding how well the students is building important
skills and knowledge.

THE HISTORY OF STANDARDIZED TESTING


1905, a french philosopher named Alfred Binet began
developing a standardized test of intelligence, work that would
later be converted into IQ test.
1926, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) was founded by college
board, a non-profit group of universities and other educational
organizations.
1959, an educational professor at the university of Iowa named
Everett Franklin created the ACT, as a competitor to the SAT.

Standardized tests don't
always measure student
learning as intended.

WHAT CAN STANDARDIZED TEST DO?


Hold schools and educators accountable for student
performance on test aligned to high standards of what they
should know and be able to do.
Evaluating Programs
Determine rewards and sanctions

WHAT THEY DONT SHOW


Academic Performance- The test do not show whether a student
should be promoted or retained. However, thats what they are
being used for.
A test cant measure the determination it takes for a child with
dyslexia to complete just one reading assignment.

Test can provide information on individual student or group
performance, That can be used in many different ways.
Proficiency in basic skills and their ability to meet academic
standards.
The testing data is used to generate info that teachers, parents,
and policy makers need to make decisions about schools and
students. (Association of American Publishers, 2000)

Conclusion
Public schools face challenges in regards to no child left behind.
A test score should not determine a student's expertise or skill in a
subject. A student is more than a number. Making a student sit
down for 3 to 4 hours is torturous, especially when all they want to
do is compare one student to another around the country...or world.
