Multi-Camera Production Roles


You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be
doing which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.

TASK 1: Define each of the following roles
Interviewer:
The interviewer is somebody who interviews a guest in the production. The guests usualy
relate to the topic of the show and the interviewer is tasked with getting the information
the audience want.

The interviewer works on the studio floor or on location
They must have a grasp of research techniques, good communication skills, clear tone of
voice, self presentation skills and the ability to work under pressure.

Director
According to http://www.bbc.co.uk/academy/production/article/art20130702112135647, a
director for multi-camera productions is responsible for leading the team and is in control
of all personal.
they mainly work in the control room tto keep things ticking over but they can operate
anywhere in the studio.
A TV director must have patience, good communication skills, enthusiasm and spacial
awareness.

Camera Person
The camera person makes sure all the camera are set up properly and ready to shoot,
they also ensure that all the action is being covered and every thing is in frame.

A camera person works on the studio floor and is always directly behind the camera they
so that they can keep an eye on the shot.
A camera person must have good colour vision, steady hands, a good grasp of the
technical aspects of a camera and be able to think on the spot to keep the shots
running when something goes wrong.

Sound Mixing
The sound mixers are responsible for recording all of the sound during a production and adding
effects to the show, they also have to make sure all the sound is clear, all the mics work and that the
sound is switched when inserts are used.

A sound mixer can be found in the sound mixing room.
A sound mixer must have a good ear for sound, a grasp of acoustics and a profession level of
recording skills.

Vision Mixing
A vision mixer has to be able to edit live multicamera shows by transitioning between shots and
capturing the action as it happens. They must also transition between inserts and the live show.
The vision mixer would work in a vision mixing studio.
A vision mixer must be able to operate many different vision mixing desks, multitask, have good
concentration and work well under extreme pressure.

Graphics Generator
A graphics generator is in charge of the the graphics when a show is on air e.i green screen
backgrounds and so on they need to sync these with the contents of the show, they are also in
control what the background of the studio looks like

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
they usually work in the control room but can work with the vision mixer.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


Good organization skills, an advance grasp of editing techniques, a good knowledge of technical
skills including simple audio and video skills and have good communication skills to help them work
in a team.

Lighting Desk
This is the person who controls the lighting desk and has the job of controlling the lights, calibrating
the lighting desk and repairing and maintaining the equipment.
They work at the lighting desk
This person has to be able to visualize the lighting effects they create, work under pressure to keep
excellent lighting throughout, be creative in their use of lighting and have the confidence to
communicate with the crew.

Floor Manager
The floor manager is basically a conduit for the director on the studio floor, they work with the
director to help with communications and keep thing running smoothly. They have a responsibility to
make sure that the the set is right, coordinate the lighting and the cameras all to the directors
wishes.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


A floor manager needs good communication skills so they can talk to everyone, they have to have
good leadership skills as they have to keep everyone working as a team, they have to multitask and
work under pressure and they need to be confident in their decisions.

Set Design
Draw a plan of your set. Mark on the position of lights, cameras, props and Green-screen
backgrounds.
Add in photographs of your final set, including props etc.

Lighting Design
Take photographs of the lighting set up for the following sections of your show;
a) The presenter introducing the show
b) Interviews (the lighting may be different for different interviews)
c) The end of the show
Stick the photographs in and add notes explaining the setup.

The interviewer will introduce the show from


this sofa. Note the light in the corner to focus
on them.

Here is the full lighting setup, we will turn this


up as we end the show so everything is litup.

The interviews will be done her, with the


lighting set to focus on the interviewee.
