Use arguments obtained from Figure 1.1 to explain why 1997 was an El Nino
year,
and why 1998 was not. Also explain why 1998 was in fact a La Nina
year, and not an
ordinary year.

Answer
The best arguments come from the bottom two figures in Figure 1.1, which indicate differences with a normal year. They are repeated below.

December 1997

This figure, for December 1997, obviously has as main colours yellow and
red, and this indicates sea surface temperatures above normal. Observe that the
areas of warming up are especially towards the Peruvian coast.

This figure, for December 1998, obviously has as main colours various shades of blue, and this indicates sea surface temperatures below normal. Observe
that the centre of colder-than-average area is off the coast.
