Elegy for Jane expresses the love that a teacher can have for their favorite student. This poem revolves
around the story of a teacher and his favorite student passing away. Roethke expresses how a teacher longs to
see his student again by stating If I only could nudge you from this sleep (line 18). The teacher wants to
see his student to wake up from her slumber, referring to her death.

The theme of the poem is undying love and the undying desire of wanting someone to come back to life.
Everyone wants their loved ones that have passed away to come back and be with them again. The poem
shows how strong true love is, because true love cannot die.

The diction used in the poem bestows a gloomy mood for its readers. For instance, she cast herself down
into such a pure depth, even a father could not find her (line 10-11). The word pure is used in a negative
context stating that she is completely consumed by sadness.

The poetic trait found in this poem is the theme of undying love. Love can never be taken away, nor can it die
out. Throughout life, love has always seem to win. This poem portrays how strong the connection between a
student and their teacher can be. Even though the teacher is not related to the student, the teacher shows as
much love to the student as a family member. The love portrayed in this poem shows true love when
someone can love another human being, even though they are not related.
