Summer Field Experience (06/01/2015 07/27/2015) 150 hours

As part of required experience sought by Penn States dietetics curriculum, I spent a summer at
HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital, completing a total of 150 hours. Under
supervision of Katelyn Quick, MS, RDN, LDN, I utilized and learned clinical nutrition skills.
Major tasks included completing patient care plan updates and nutrition addendums, ordering
dietary supplements, educating patients on food/drug interactions, and taking part in nutrition
education classes on diabetes, healthy living, heart failure, and Parkinsons disease. I had the
opportunity to sit in on medical team conference meetings and observe wound rounds. I also
completed a public bulletin board educating people on how to accurately read a nutrition facts
label, as shown below. Along with a fellow student, I helped create MyPlate education materials
for the healthy living skills class and blood glucose examples for those participating in diabetes
education. Education was a major component of HealthSouths mission, for we even traveled to a
nearby senior center and presented a class on hidden fats in food products. Each day provided a
valuable learning experience and helped me grow as a dietetics student.
