Inequalities in Society
All people are created equal; as this becomes more and more far-fetched so does our hope
for a utopian society. Segregation dates back far into the past as people of different beliefs and
identity have sent them into slavery, exile, excommunication, or execution. Even after
movements such as womens rights and civil rights, there is no full equality. Inequalities built on
the stereotypes of identity and culture has created many conflicts and controversies over the past
years that have been expanded through media.
Inequality is happening everywhere and is especially frequent in areas with one main
belief and others gaining popularity. People believe that Donald Trump is persecuting religions
similar to previous events, such as the Holocaust (Farrell). This is one occasion of the media
displaying discrimination on a worldwide scale. But some do not believe that this is a fair
assumption, like David T. Smith who said, The choice depends on who is the greater threat, the
group getting persecuted or the group doing the persecution. Recently, there has been a great
effort to punish actions that discriminate against religions or cultures but some believe that they
are not enough (Abbey-Lambertz). Social criticism is not only based on the beliefs of its victims
but is also based on their appearance and how they identify themselves.
Segregation may not be as profound as in the 1900s but is till frequent in todays society.
Stereotypes are being applied to youth purely based on their appearance (Semple). This is

occurring frequently with Muslims as they are automatically classified as Terrorists (Brekke).
Fortunately in todays society, more people display their true identity (gay, transgender, and
bisexual) and as more people become accepting of this, discrimination is decreasing. But there
are still those that dont believe in these concepts.
These inequalities, based on beliefs and identity, are making the conflicts that are
crippling society. Technology has evolved inequality as it is now spread with just the click of a
button. Even though there is still discrimination, the era of slavery and executions has long
passed. As Megan Kierstead once said, Everyone is different, so were all the same.
