Romeo and Juliet Playlist
1. Forever and Always
By: Parachute
[Verse 1:]
She's sitting at the table, the hours get later
He was supposed to be here
She's sure he would have called
She waits a little longer, there's no one in the driveway
No one said they've seen him
Why, is something wrong?
She looks back to the window
Suddenly the phone rings
A voice says something's happened
That she should come right now
Her mind goes to December
She thinks of when he asked her
He bent down on his knees first
And he said
[Chorus:]
I want you forever, forever and always
Through the good and the bad and the ugly
We'll grow old together
Forever and always
[Verse 2:]
She pulls up to the entrance
She walks right to the front desk
They lead her down a million halls, a maze that's never ending
They talk about what happened but she can barely hear them
She tries to keep a straight face as she walks into the room
She sits by his bedside, holds his hand too tight
They talk about the kids they're gonna have and the good life
The house on the hillside, where they would stay
[Chorus:]
Stay there forever, forever and always
Through the good and the bad and the ugly
We'll grow old together, and always remember
Whether happy or sad or whatever.
We'll still love each other, forever and always

[Bridge:]
Then she gets an idea and calls in the nurses
Brings up the chaplain and he says a couple verses
She borrows some rings from the couple next door
Everybody's laughing as the tears fall on the floor
She looks into his eyes, and she says
[Chorus:]
I want you forever, forever and always
Through the good and the bad and the ugly
We'll grow old together, and always remember
Whether rich or for poor or for better.
We'll still love each other, forever and always
Forever and always, forever and always
She finishes the vows but the beeps are getting too slow
His voice is almost too low
As he says, I love you forever, forever and always
Please just remember even if I'm not here
I'll always love you, forever and always
S: This song relates to both the characters of Romeo and Juliet and their actions in the
play.
P: In the song the final five lines say " She finishes the vows but the beeps are getting too
slow, His voice is almost too low, As he says, I love you forever, forever and always,
Please just remember even if I'm not here, I'll always love you, forever and always".
In Act II, Scene VI Romeo and Juliet get married.
E: This song shows the same impulsive behavior of getting married like the behavior of
Romeo and Juliet. Also, the boyfriend in the song dies at the end next to his wife, the
same as Romeo at the end of the play.

2. Marry Me
By: Train

Tyler King
Period 3
Forever can never be long enough for me
Feel like I've had long enough with you
Forget the world now we won't let them see
But there's one thing left to do
Now that the weight has lifted
Love has surely shifted my way
Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say
Hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Together can never be close enough for me
Feel like I am close enough to you
You wear white and I'll wear out the words I love you
And you're beautiful
Now that the wait is over
And love and has finally shown her my way
Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Promise me
You'll always be
Happy by my side
I promise to
Sing to you
When all the music dies
And marry me
Today and everyday
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will

Marry me
Mm-hmm
S: This song displays similar ideals of Romeo.
P: In the song, lines 7 and 8, it says "Marry me, today and everyday". In Act II, Scene II
Romeo tells Juliet to marry him as soon as possible. The first line of the song says
"Forever can never be long enough for me". In Act V, Scene III Romeo kills himself
because he believes that it will reunite him and Juliet in Heaven.
E: The song and the play show the impulsive behavior of those in love, or so they
believe. Also, both talk of forever and this represents the reason for Romeo's suicide to be
with Juliet.

3. Wake Me Up
By: Avicii
Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start
They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
4

Tyler King
Period 3
Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well that's fine by me
So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost
[x2]
I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
I hope I get the chance to travel the world
And I don't have any plans
I wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life's a game made for everyone
And love is a prize

So wake me up when it's all over

When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost
[x2]
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
S: This song shows Juliet in the time while she was using the sleeping potion and Romeo
while he was chasing Juliet.
P: The title of the song is "Wake Me Up". In lines 5 and 6 of the song, it says " They tell
me I'm too young to understand, They say I'm caught up in a dream". In Act IV, Scene IV
to Act V, Scene III Juliet is asleep while a series of events is happening around her.
E: The song and play both discuss being asleep and dreaming. In the song it says he's too
young and in a dream which was told to Romeo by multiple characters in the play.

4. Hopelessness
By: Train
I hopelessly, helplessly, wonder why
Everything gotta change around me
I'd tell it to your face
But you lost your face along the way
And I'd say it on the phone
If I thought you were alone
Why do things have to change
But you don't need my pictures on your wall
You say you need no one
And you don't need my secret midnight call
I guess you need no one

Period 3
Is anybody waiting at home for you
'Cause it's time that will tell if it's heaven if it's hell or if it's
Anybody waiting at home for you
'Cause it's time that will tell this tale
You're in and out up and down
Wonder if you're lost or found
But I got my hands on you
Are you strong enough to tow the line
Are you gonna make me yours
Or do I make you mine
I'm in and out I'm up and down
Wonder if I'm lost or found
But I need your hands on me now
But you don't need my pictures on your wall
You say you need no one
And you don't need my secret midnight call
I guess you need no one
Is anybody waiting at home for you
'Cause it's time that will tell if it's heaven if it's hell or if it's
Anybody waiting at home for you
'Cause it's time that will tell this tale
I hopelessly, helplessly, wonder why
Everything gotta change
S: This song demonstrates the characteristics of Romeo after he learned that he was
exiled.
P: The title of the song is "Hopeless". During the song he is talking/singing to a "you". In
Act III, Scene III Romeo is crying to the Friar.
E: Romeo feels hopeless after being exiled because he does not believe there is any
chance for him and Juliet to be together. The "you" in the song would be Juliet if the
song was from Romeo's perspective. Train refers to the song as a "tale" in the last line
which is a near substitute for play/story.

5. Stay With Me
By: Sam Smith
Guess it's true
I'm not good
At a one night stand
But I still need love
Cos I'm just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave Will you hold my hand
Oh won't you
Stay with me
Cos you're
All I need
This ain't love
It's clear to see
But darling
Stay with me
Why am I so emotional?
8

Tyler King
Period 3
No it's not a good look
Gain some self control
Deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me
So it doesn't hurt

Oh won't you
Stay with me
Cos you're
All I need
This ain't love
It's clear to see
But darling
Stay with me
Oh won't you
Stay with me
Cos you're
All I need
This ain't love
It's clear to see
But darling
Stay with me
S: This song characterizes how both Romeo and Juliet act in Act III, Scene V.
P: In Act III, Scene V there is dialogue between Romeo and Juliet about staying and
leaving. In the song it says "Why am I so emotional?". The song is titled "Stay With Me".
Also in the song it says "I don't want you to leave".
E: In Act III, Scene V Romeo and Juliet both have the desire to stay with each other and
for Romeo to leave at some point in the scene. Romeo is told he is too emotional in the
story when he is told he is womanish by the Friar.

6. War
By: Edwin Starr
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, uh-huh, uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it again, y'all
War, huh, good god
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
Oh war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mothers' eyes
When their sons go off to fight and lose their lives
I said, war, huh, good god, y'all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it again
War, huh, whoa-oh-whoa-oh, Lord
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreak
War, friend only to the undertaker
Oh, war, is an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
10

Tyler King
Period 3
War has caused unrest within the younger generation
Induction then destruction, who wants to die?
Oh, war, huh, good god, y'all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it, say it, say it
War, huh, uh-huh, yeah, uh
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War, it got one friend, that's the undertaker
Oh, war has shattered many a young man's dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much too short and precious to spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life, it can only take it away
Oh, war, huh, good god, y'all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it again
War, huh, whoa-oh-whoa-oh, Lord
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding, tell me
Is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But lord knows there's got to be a better way
Oh, war, huh, good god, y'all
What is it good for?
You tell me, (nothing) say it, say it, say it, say it
War, huh, good god, yeah, huh
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it (nothing)
S: The song War conveys the theme "There is no true victor in war".
P: In multiple occurrences in the play there was conflict or fighting between the
Montagues and Capulets like in Act I, Scene I and Act III, Scene I. The song is titled
"War" and is an anti-war/anti-violence song.
E: The song War is almost an anti-anthem to the fighting between the Montagues and
Capulets. The theme "There is no true victor in war" is shown through the song as it
repeats "War, What is it good for?, Absolutely nothing".

7. Your Hand in Mine

By: Explosions in the Sky
S: The mood of the song is joyous but with an undertone of sadness. The tone is defiant,
like they overcame an obstacle that people said they couldn't. Romeo and Juliet are happy
but the audience already knows that their love is doomed.
P: In Act III, Scene V Juliet says that Romeo looks dead. In the prologue, it says that
Romeo and Juliet die because of their family's conflict.
E: We already know that they are going to die so even though the reader is happy they are
together, there is a sadness for the reader. Romeo and Juliet overcome their parents feud
to be happy against all odds and that's why there is a bit of defiance in the song.
