Students will then read the article about Muncie and then go back and reanswer the anticipation guide questions.
We will then go back over these questions as a whole class and re-answer
with what they came up with. The class will also be shown the pictures again
and asked if they can better guess who is in each picture or where the
pictures are from.
Assessment/Evaluation:
We will use the answers after the students have read the page about Muncie
for our assessment as they should have been able to correctly answer each
statement after reading.
Review
Today we began talking about the Muncie community and how it came about.
So far we know that Muncie got its name from a tribe that settled her in the
1770s. We also know that Goldsmith Gilbert founded the first successful
trading post in Muncie in 1823 and that natural gas was found near Muncie in
1886. The five Ball brothers moved their glass company to Muncie during
this time as well. We also learned about the statue that pays tribute to the
Ball brothers father, Edmund Burke Ball. Lastly, we have learned the Central
High school is the gathering spot here in Muncie for many activities.

Community- Past, present, future
DATE: March 12, 2015
Motivation
Students (in pairs of two) will have an envelope.
Each envelope will have two pictures in it.
The pictures will be of the same landmark in Muncie (one from the
past and one current)
The students will take a minute to look at the pictures and compare
them.
Rationale
The purpose of this lesson is to show how Muncie has changed over
time.
ContentThe first trading post was established in 1823 by Goldsmith Gilbert
Delaware county was named after the Delaware Indians in the
1770s because of the Munsee or wolf Indians in this
particular location.
In 1820 Delaware county was open for settlement.
The five Ball Brothers founded Ball State University and brought the
Ball glass company to Muncie from Buffalo New York.
Muncies current population is 70,085 people.
Muncies population in 1865 was 3,000 people.
Muncies symbol is The Appeal to the Great Spirit. A statue by
Cyrus Dallin. It was made as a tribute to Edmund Burke
Ball by his wife in 1925.
Another current landmark is the Bell Tower on Mckinley. Located on
Ball States Campus.
Muncie's first public hospital was opened in 1891 by William and
Emmer Whitney. Called Whitney Hospital
Check for understandingJustify why you placed _____ in the past/present side of the chart?
Where would you put the population of 70,085?
Explain what Goldsmith Gilbert contributed to Muncie. Where would
you place this on the T-Chart?
Why are the Ball Brothers so famous?
What is the name of the statue in Muncie?
Activities
The students will work to make a T-chart as a class. They will raise their
hand and give statements about Muncie. They will then decide if these
statements are from Muncie in the past or Muncie now. If they cannot
come up with a statement a statement will then be given to the
students. Then the students will decide which side of the T-chart the
statement belongs on.
Gear Up- Students will come up with each statement about Muncie
on their own. They will then decide which side, past or
present Muncie the statement belongs on.
Gear Down The students will be given each statement about
Muncie. They will then only state which side of the T-chart
the statement goes on, past or present Muncie.
Assessment/Evaluation
We will use the T-chart as the assessment. Each student will get the
chance to write/give ideas for
the chart and this is what will be evaluated.
ReviewToday we have compared events that occurred in Muncie from the past
and present. We discussed important people and events that occurred
in the past. We also talked about important people and events that are
occurring currently in the Muncie community.

Muncie Community Reading and Discussion
March 17, 2015
Motivation
The students will watch a 30 second video of the Muncie transforming
into what it is today.
Rationale
The purpose of this lesson is to learn a little more about the roots of
the Muncie
Community and how it all came together. To show the
students how they are part of the community.
Content Muncie settlers began by settling along White River
Muncie has both agricultural and industrial roots
Settlers made their way to the rich Indiana farmland in the early
1800s

A short story will be read by the students. The students will participate
in a round robin, and the teacher will take a turn in the round robin to
show her being a part of the classroom community.
Gear Up- The student will read out loud to the teacher and answer a question
after
each section the student read. The question will pertain to the
particular section
read by the student.
Gear Down The student will read with another student/partner reading
during the round
robin.
Assessment/Evaluation
There will be an observation of the students paying attention to the
reading and
following along when it is not their turn to read. The
students will also have an open
discussion at the end of the reading with
the teacher providing guided questions to stay on topic. The student will
provide answers to any questions asked, and or
provide discussion to
the guided questions.
ReviewNow that we have read and discussed this article we have learned a
little more
about how the Muncie community started. We also have
learned about new people
such as Warner Gear who founded the
establishments for automobile transmissions. We have also learned a little
more about the Ball brothers and their family, and also
about Goldsmith

Motivation
Show a map of Muncie in present day and one from 10 years ago. Have
students discuss the similarities and differences between them.
Rationale
The purpose of this lesson is for students to see how quickly a city can
change. Ten years may seem like a long time, but many changes can happen
in that time.
Content
-An example of a landmark is The Bell Tower on BSU Campus and The
Appeal to the Great Spirit statue.
-Major places, such as hospitals, schools, neighborhoods, can be changed or
added to over time.
-Places can be re-named or become a new store.
-Places can be re-located.
Check for Understanding
Students will list or describe things that we can add to our new map of
Muncie.
Activities
The students and I will construct a map using a variety of materials that
could resemble Muncie in 10 years. After every rotation, the new group will
continue to add on to our map.
Assessment/Evaluation
The students will have constructed a map of Muncie in the year 2025. As the
teacher, I will observe and assess how the students work together as a
community as they construct Muncie in 2025.
Review
Today we talked about how Muncie has changed over the years and how it
will continue to change. We also constructed a model map of what Muncie
may look like in 2025.
