Standards:
3.1.2: Explain why and how the local community was established and
identify its founders and early settlers.
Objectives:
The students will read about the Muncie community in the past leading up to
present day Muncie.
The students will answer questions about the Muncie community in the past.
______________________________________________________________________
Motivation:

Students will be shown several pictures of Muncie as it has developed. The

students will be asked if they know what each picture is.
Rationale-goal for learner:
Today we are going to begin learning about how Muncie came to be. We
begin by reading a short story about Muncie to gain some insight as to who
was here before we were. It is important to know the history of our
community so that we can continue to build it as well as preserve history.
Without history those who live here after us will never know what Muncie
was like when we were here or know about those that were here before us.
Content:
Students will need to think about what they have learned about in MP3 in
previous grade levels. This will then help them answer true or false to the
anticipation guide questions. Students will then read a short page about the
Muncie community to gain new knowledge such as those who first settled
here, important people to Muncie, and businesses that came from early
Muncie.
Check for understanding:
Who was Muncie first home to in 1770?
Delaware Indians
Where did the name Muncie come from?
Munsee or wolf indians who were particular to this area
Who was the area opened up to in the 1820s?
White settlers
Goldsmith Gilbert founded what?
Successful trading post in 1823
When was natural gas found near Muncie?
1886
What did the discovery of natural gas lead to?
Steel and glass industry growing in Muncie
How do you think the steel and glass manufacturing effected Muncie?
It grew the economy and allowed for more jobs to be created.
How many Ball brothers were there?
5 brothers
Can anyone name any of the Ball brothers?
Edmund
George
William
Frank
Lucius
What is the name of the statue that pays tribute to Edmund Burke Ball?
The Appeal to the Great Spirit
What high school is the gathering point for the Muncie community?
Central High School
Activities:
As a class, the students will be shown several pictures and asked if they
know where these were taken or who is in a picture. The students will then
be given a series of statements to determine their validity. We will mark their
answers on the board to refer back to after reading the article.

Students will then read the article about Muncie and then go back and reanswer the anticipation guide questions.
We will then go back over these questions as a whole class and re-answer
with what they came up with. The class will also be shown the pictures again
and asked if they can better guess who is in each picture or where the
pictures are from.
Assessment/Evaluation:
We will use the answers after the students have read the page about Muncie
for our assessment as they should have been able to correctly answer each
statement after reading.
Review
Today we began talking about the Muncie community and how it came about.
So far we know that Muncie got its name from a tribe that settled her in the
1770s. We also know that Goldsmith Gilbert founded the first successful
trading post in Muncie in 1823 and that natural gas was found near Muncie in
1886. The five Ball brothers moved their glass company to Muncie during
this time as well. We also learned about the statue that pays tribute to the
Ball brothers father, Edmund Burke Ball. Lastly, we have learned the Central
High school is the gathering spot here in Muncie for many activities.

306 students at Longfellow Elementary School
Today, students can now visit the Buley Center. This is on the former
grounds of Longfellow Elementary School.

Check for understandingJustify why you placed _____ in the past/present side of the chart?
Where would you put the population of 70,085?
Explain what Goldsmith Gilbert contributed to Muncie. Where would
you place this on the T-Chart?
Why are the Ball Brothers so famous?
What is the name of the statue in Muncie?
Activities
The students will work to make a T-chart as a class. They will raise their
hand and give statements about Muncie. They will then decide if these
statements are from Muncie in the past or Muncie now. If they cannot
come up with a statement a statement will then be given to the
students. Then the students will decide which side of the T-chart the
statement belongs on.
Gear Up- Students will come up with each statement about Muncie
on their own. They will then decide which side, past or
present Muncie the statement belongs on.
Gear Down The students will be given each statement about
Muncie. They will then only state which side of the T-chart
the statement goes on, past or present Muncie.
Assessment/Evaluation
We will use the T-chart as the assessment. Each student will get the
chance to write/give ideas for
the chart and this is what will be evaluated.
ReviewToday we have compared events that occurred in Muncie from the past

History of Muncie and Delaware County

Like many Midwestern communities, Muncie has both agricultural and
industrial roots.
Muncie has been named Americas Hometown. As is the case with many
Midwestern Hometowns, Muncie has gone through phases of growth, decline
and rebirth. Although Muncie was noted for meaningful achievements in
industrialization during the 20th Century, the community has had to face a
declining industrial base over the past decade.
We now look to the ideas in information technology, higher education and
healthcare.
Muncie owes its origins to a clan of the Delaware Indians that established a
village located along the east fork of the White River. Munseetown was one
of several villages located along White River. Prior to permanent settlement
French traders and trappers, British soldiers and Moravian missionaries
visited Munseetown.
Settlers made their way to the rich farmlands of the Indiana Territory in the
early 1800s.The land that is now Indiana was part of federal lands known as
the Northwest Territory and was initially governed under The Northwest
Ordinance of 1787.This ordinance did not allow slavery and made specific
provisions for civil liberties. It divided the lands east of the Mississippi and
between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes into proposed states, counties,
townships and sections, with specific instructions for the financing of public
education. Many of these geopolitical boundaries still exist in Delaware
County.
The town of Muncie was founded in 1827 when Goldsmith C. Gilbert, a
trader, donated land for the county seat. The city of Muncie was incorporated
in 1865.
Industrial development was aided by the arrival of the Indianapolis and
Bellefontaine Railroad in 1852 and the discovery of natural gas in the
1880s.In 1888 the Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company, known for its
glass canning jars, relocated from Buffalo, New York due to the abundance of
cheap natural gas in the area. Although Ball Corporation moved to Colorado
in 1998, the Ball family was instrumental in establishing both Ball State
University and Ball Memorial Hospital, and continues to be supportive of
Muncies standard of living through significant philanthropic efforts.

Warner Gear, in Muncie since 1901, founded the development of automobile

transmissions throughout the 20th Century. Milestones include
standardization of the industry's first manual transmissions as well as
introduction of transmission synchronization and development of a selfcontained overdrive. Warner Gear merged with several other automotive
manufacturers in 1928 to form Borg-Warner Automotive. World War IIs jeeps
were built with Warner Gears transmissions. Map Scavenger Hunt
