Description
Licensed and registered practical nurses (LPNs and RPNs) provide nursing services, within
a defined scope of practice, to patients based on patient assessment and care planning
procedures, inlcuding nursing interventions such as taking vital signs, applying aseptic
techniques including sterile dressing, ensuring infection control, monitoring nutritional
intake and conducting specimen collection, and reinforcing teaching done by registered
nurses regarding how family members should care for a relative.
They are employed in hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, rehabilitation

centres, doctors' offices, clinics, companies, private homes, and community health centres.

Licensed or registered pratical nurses work in hospitals, physicians' offices, home
healthcare services, and nursing care facilities. Others work in correctional facilities,
schools, clinics, or serve in the military.
Some nurses move frequently, travelling in the United States and throughout the world to
help care for patients in places where there are not enough healthcare workers.

Main Duties

Measure and record patients' vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood
pressure, pulse, and respiration.
Administer prescribed medications or start intravenous fluids, noting times and
amounts on patients' charts.
Provide basic patient care or treatments, such as taking temperatures or blood
pressures, dressing wounds, treating bedsores, giving enemas or douches, rubbing
with alcohol, massaging, or performing catheterizations.
Observe patients, charting and reporting changes in patients' conditions, such as
adverse reactions to medication or treatment, and taking any necessary action.
Work as part of a healthcare team to assess patient needs, plan and modify care, and
implement interventions.
Assemble and use equipment, such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, or oxygen
suppliers.
Evaluate nursing intervention outcomes, consulting with other healthcare team
members as necessary.
Answer patients' calls and determine how to assist them.
Apply compresses, ice bags, or hot water bottles.
Prepare patients for examinations, tests, or treatments and explain procedures.

Registration with a regulatory body is required in all provinces and territories.
