Lesson Two
NGSS
3-ESS3-1: Make a claim about the merit of a design solution that
reduces the impacts of weather-related hazard.
Common Core
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a
problem based on how well each is likely to meet the
criteria and constraints of the problem.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to create a model and use
it demonstrate how rain effects the movements of pollutants. After,
they will demonstrate a solution that they designed to help prevent
weather from being such a hazard.
Behavioral Objective: Students will be able to explain and draw or
make a model to demonstrate what happens to pollutants and soil
when it rains on farms, roadways and industrial areas.
Engagement/ Anticipatory set:
Class discussion on personal experience with weather hazards
Where do you see most loose trash outside?
How do you think rain affects city pollutants?
o Coco powder
o Styrofoam beads
o Mini wire screen pieces
Using the Play Doh, clay, wet sand, metal tray and mini wire
scree pieces, allow students work in groups of three to create a
landscape
Allow students to apply pollution materials and then water to
watch how water runoff effects the movement of the pollution
Students will note observations and work together to conclude a
design solution that prevents further hazards
Students will write an individual paper summarizing data and
conclusions
Assessment:
Summative
Students will be assessed on the accuracy of their hazard prevention
designs.
Formative
Students will be assessed on the final paper they turn in.
Higher Order Thinking Skills:
Application: Students will be able to take from the lesson and apply it
to their own knowledge and experiences with recycling.
