Shawn Winger

Stephen Edwin King was born September 21, 1947 in Portland Maine,
he has 3 children and a wife Tabitha king who also writes short novels. When
he was first starting out as a writer him and his wife were having many
monetary issues, so to fix this King became a high school teacher at
Hampton academy. In 1973 King finished his first novel, Carrie, it was an
instant hit and many people wanted more books so in the spring of 1974 he
moved to Boulder, Colorado and began to write one of his best known novels
The Shining. One of Kings biggest inspirations was H. P. Lovecraft, in an
interview King stated that when he picked up his first Lovecraft book and
read it he knew what he want to do with the rest of his life, he now lives in
Bangor, Maine still chilling readers with his cryptic tales.
There are three important characters in the story, Andy McGee, Charlie
McGee, and the villain of the story Raintree. First, Andy is Charlies Father,
his personality and actions all retain back to him trying to protect and care
for his daughter Charlie. When faced with trouble he thinks rationally and
always tries to do what is best for his daughter. Second, Charlie is eight
years old and has the ability to start fires, she thinks very logically for her
age. She knows the consequences of using her ability and does not wish to
use them. Third, Raintree, he is a Native American worker at The Shop, he
has seen Charlies abilities and believes she is part of the Natives gods and
he must sacrifice her back to them. His main goal as a character in the novel
is to trick Charlie to lure her away from The Shop and her father so he will be
able to kill her.
The beginning of the starts with the main characters running from shop
agents in New York City, it starts this way already action packed and
dangerous so it can entice the reader and make them continue reading. After
that though most of the plot takes place in a fictional town King created
called Hastings Glen, NY. King made this town because in he likes to find a
way to connect all of his novels together, basically he created a whole new
universe with each of his novels. The time period plays a somewhat of an
important role, It is the 90s so new technology is coming out and everyone
is experimenting with new things especially the main enemy of the novel,
The Shop.
