Divider
Whenlayingoutcircles,arcs,andradii,itisbesttousethe
divider (Figure 14). The legs of the divider must be of the
samelengthandbekeptsharp.Thedividercartbeusedto
lay out and measure distances (Figure 15). To set the
dividertothecorrectlength,placeonepointonaninchmark
of a steel rule and open the divider until the other leg
matchesthecorrectmeasuremeritrequired(Figure16).

Trammel
Whenscribingcircles,arcs,andradiithataretoolargeto
be produced with the divider, a trammel should be used
(Figure17). The trammel is made of three main parts: the
beam,twoslidingheadswithscriberpoints,andanadjusting
screwthatisattachedtooneoftheheads.Thetrammelcan
bemadetoscribelargerdistanceswiththeuseofextension
rods. This layout tool is set in the same manner as the
divider.

HermaphroditeCalliper
Thehermaphroditecalliper(Figure18)isatoolusedto
layout lines that are parallel with the edges of the work
piece(Figure19).Itcanalsobeusedtolocatethecenterof
cylindricalshapedworkplaces(Figure110).

A surface gage (Figure 111) is used for many

purposes, butis most often used for layout work. The
gage can be used to scribe layout lines at any given
distanceparalleltotheworksurface(Figure112).
