CLASS:
The Lake Zurich Fire Department rescued two teens from the water off Paulus Beach
today after they fell through the ice while trying to cross the lake, officials said.
The teenagers were transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington
in stable condition, Fire Chief David Wheelock said, adding that they had displayed
symptoms of hypothermia.
Rescuers were called to the scene just after 2:30 p.m., and found the two teenagers
lying on an ice shelf about 100 yards from shore. Wheelock said the teens were trying to
walk across the semi-frozen lake.
According to Wheelock, a Lake Zurich public works employee was the first person on
the scene, and went into the water trying to rescue the two stranded teenagers. The
employee was treated on the scene and released. Wheelock declined to identify the
employee, citing patient confidentially laws.
Two younger children also fell into the lake, Wheelock said, but they quickly pulled
themselves out of the water. Wheelock said he wasnt sure how the two younger kids
managed to make it out of the water while the other two could not, but said it might
have been because they weighed less. These two were also treated on the scene and
released to their parents. Wheelock said all four were relatives, but would not elaborate.
