US Route 33 Northwest of Nelsonville has been reopened to traffic. The roadway was closed at approximately
7:00 pm due to a large brush fire. Fire crews from the U.S. National Forrest are currently working on the fire area
and estimate containment of the fire by 11:00 pm this evening. U.S. Forrest Service officials estimate that the fire
burned 75 acres in the Dorr Run area. 75% of the burned area is located in the Wayne National Forrest.
York Township Firefighters were alerted to the area at 3:39 pm for a brush fire. The fire spread rapidly through
the hills because of late afternoon winds and low humidity. Approximately 50 firefighters were used to contain the
fire. Firefighters from York Township Volunteer Fire Department, Nelsonville Fire Department, Ohio Department
of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forrest Service worked together on the fire. Command of the incident has
been transferred from York Township Fire Department to the U.S. Forrest Service. The cause of the fire is still
under investigation at this time. Any further questions concerning the fire can be addressed by contacting the
U.S. Forrest Service, Wayne National Forrest office at (740) 753-0101.
