Tutorial Sheet-1
Air-Gap MMF in Rotating Machines
1. Three phase balanced supply is given to the three windings of Y-connected
alternator, so as to produce rotating magnetic field of constant amplitude.
Neutral of the supply is connected to the neutral of the star connected
windings. If supply to one of the windings is disconnected. Obtain expression
for the resultant m.m.f wave
(a) resolved into positive and negative traveling mmf waves
(b) resolved into rotating mmf and pulsating mmf
2. Three phase balanced supply is given to the three windings of alternator, so
as to produce rotating magnetic field of constant amplitude. Neutral of the
supply is isolated from the neutral of the star connected windings. If supply
to one of the windings is disconnected.
(a) resolved into positive and negative traveling mmf waves
(b) resolved into rotating mmf and pulsating mmf
Compare the mmf wave of Problem-1 with that of Problem-2 and comment.
3. Two phase supply (with same magnitude as rated 3 phase supply) is given to
two windings of a 3 phase alternator. Obtain the expression for mmf wave by
resolving into forward and backward rotating waves.
4. Consider a 3 phase, 6 slot, 2 pole star connected synchronous machine.
Obtain the resultant m.m.f waveform when the current in Phase-A winding is
(a) Maximum, (b) Half the maximum and (c) Zero. (Assume filament
conductors).
5. For the synchronous machine described in above problem, obtain the
mathematical expression for the resultant m.m.f waveform in terms of
fundamental and harmonic components.
