Introduction

Justification
TheOneSmallChange(OSC)programisofferedasanincentivebasedwellness
benefittofulltimeemployeesatSaltLakeCommunityCollege.Theprogramis
currentlyruninafacetofacelecturestylesettingandasanasynchronous
webinarthatisonlyavailableforashortwindowinthefiscalyear.Throughoutthe
program,participantsareexpectedtolearnanddemonstrateknowledgeofthe
variousstagesoftheHealthBeliefModelandgeneralhealthybehaviorrelated
changeprinciples.Theymustdemonstratetheirknowledgebyapplyingthe
StagesofChange(aswellashealthyhabitsandmotivation)toanexampleand
theneventuallyapplyingittotheirownlives.
Themainchallengesthisprogram
facesarethatthecontent/programisnotreadilyavailabletoallemployeesatall
times,findingthemethod/technologythatwillbestmeettheirneeds,and
addressingtheneedtoincorporateassessmentmeasuresthatcurrentlydonot
exist.

Methods

Trueexperimentaldesign
1. WewillcreatetwosessionsoftheOneSmallChangeprogramonethat
willbethecurrentmethodofdelivery,andonethatwillusetheonline
module.Theparticipantswillnotknowwhichsessioniswhichtokeepthe
samplerandom.Afterthesignupwindowhaspassed,wewillrandomly
assignparticipantsintoeachgroup.

wellnessincentivesthroughtheSLCCEmployeeWellnessBenefit
Program.

1. Wewillusepreandposttestinstrumentstoassessknowledgeand
attitudes.Wewillcollectdemographicsonallparticipantspriorto
participation.Pre&posttestonattitudeswewilluseTylkasintuitive
eatingscale.Pre&Posttestonknowledgewewillcreateasummative
assessmentandmeetwithsubjectmatterexpertforreliability.Wewill
alsouseCronbachsalpha.

ThreatstoInternalValidity
1. HistoryThreat
Externalcouldbeanissueifthemediaweretoreleasesomestudythat
lookstodiscreditthecontentbeingtaughtintheOneSmallChange
program.Wecouldminimizethisthreatbyperiodicallyreinforcingthe
contentinapositiveway.Therearenorealexperimentaldesignsolution
tohistorythreats,otherthantonotethem.
2. Selection(SubjectCharacteristics)Threat
Theparticipantsvolunteertobeintheprogram,sotherecouldbeself
selectionbias.Wecouldminimizethisbyselectingatrandomparticipants
intheprogramwillingtobeapartofthestudy.
3. SubjectAttrition(Mortality)Threat
Itisverylikelythatsomeparticipantswillthinkthatthecontentisnot
applicabletothemandtheymaydroptheprogram.Itisalsolikelythat
participantscouldchooseagoalthatisunrealistic,ortheymighttrytodo
toomanychangesatonce,theycouldexperiencesomefrustrationand
droptheprogram.Wecanminimizethisthreatbyemphasizingthe
contentpriortotheirparticipationandalsobyusingsomeearly
interventiontechniquestohelpthemfindagoalthatisrealistic.Potential
problemcouldbethedifferentdropoutratesinthedifferentconditions.
Wewillcollectdemographicdatatocomparedropoutstocompleters.
vi.ProposedDataAnalysis
WewilldoatwobytwoANOVAassessingknowledgeandattitudes
separately.Timewillbeawithinfactorbecausetheinstrumentswillbea
pretestandaposttest.Wealsowouldhaveabetweensubjectsfactor
becausetheinterventionisanonlinemoduleandthecontrolwillbean
inclassstylelecture.Theparticipantsineachinclassandonlinewould
onlyparticipateinthesessiontheywereassignedto.
