his book offers a close study of how film produces sensory-affective experience for the spectator. It argues that we must explore
this affective dimension if we want to understand how cinema takes up
cultural or thematic issues. Examining cinematic affect through close
readings of how affective immersion in cinema works to engage viewers with history, memory and cultural specificity, it deals with both fiction film and documentary. Taking an international perspective, it includes case studies of Korean detective film, classical Japanese cinema,
modern Greek cinema, independent American cinema, Indian documentary, Australian television documentary, Indonesian political docudrama, avantgarde French documentary and Australian Indigenous
film. Rutherford draws on the analysis of embodied affect to revise many
of the foundational concepts of film studies. Drawing on Miriam Hansens
readings of Walter Benjamin and Siegfried Kracauer, the book explores
the capacity of film to produce experiences in which the boundaries
between the spectator and the film become porous and the viewer is
transported in a heightened way into the film.

tions of racial and ethnic identity, such as Chineseness, that are objectively defined within a static nation-state mechanism in an era of globalization. Through the study of the representation of Chineseness, this
book expands the theoretical discussions on the politics of national
identity and cultural syncretism represented in transnational cinema
and further provides a good example of the familiar cycle of ambivalent emotion toward the West in the aftermath of postcolonialism. China
and Taiwans long history of engaging in a subordinate relationship
with the West enhances the resurgence of ambivalence. The representations become a significant and predominant way to mediate ones
bodily experiences, to connect and collaborate with one another, and
to form and inform ones cultural identity. The analyses of these films
and the audience discourse are essential to an understanding of the
ways in which new media technologies impact and alter the human interactions between peoples from various cultural, social, and political
contexts.

ver the past few decades, Italian colonial cinema has proved to
be a compelling area to explore artistic productions born during
the colonial and fascist periods whose unique ideology shifted from
propaganda to fiction. The films produced during the Italian colonial
intervention in Africa, which lasted roughly seventy-five years, reflect
cinemas recollection of political beliefs and its aesthetic attention to
colonialism while exposing its ideological contradictions. Italian colonial films mirror imperial ideology influenced by a racial hierarchy that
was acted upon during the colonization of Africa.
This study on images of Italian and African identities displayed in
these films today invites viewers to reflect on racially constructed images that speak of justice and loyalty, values that reflect nationalist and
patriotic ideals defining but also confining the identities of both Africans and Italians. The films analyzed in this book include Attilio Gattis Siliva Zulu (1927); Mario Camerinis Kif tebbi (1928); Augusto Geninas
Squadrone bianco (1936). To conclude this journey through colonial discourses in Italian cinema, two examples of contemporary cinema given
by Bernardo Bertolucci in Lassedio (1998) and Cristina Comencini in Bianco e Nero (2007) expand the study from colonial national and cultural
identity to interracial relationships in todays multiethnic Italy. The
representations of African and Italian identities found in these two contemporary films grow into compelling visual documents of a historical connection that does not seem to move forward from its colonial
mentality.
These films analyses are helpful tools for understanding the growing racial intolerance which has been troubling Italian society in the
past decade. The need remains crucial to explain the racial component
of the relationship between Italy and Africa by looking at the imagery
of national and cultural identity found in the films shot in Africa during the Italian expansionist intervention in the 1920s and 1930s.

his critical study of Mike Leighs cinema is a comprehensive assessment of his thirty plus years in film, including his television
features, from the first feature-length Bleak Moments to All or Nothing.
Through his own species of tragicomedy and favored thematic content
concentrating on relationships, Leigh enlarges the emotional boundaries of cinema for performers and audience alike. His deep and fully realized characters often subvert both decorum and irony traditionally
associated with British film and television. Leighs sense of the reciprocity and interpenetration of the material mundane, the ridiculous, and
the humanistic sublime brings respect for the complexity of the ordinary and merits celebration within the democratic and demotic art of
film.

n September 11, 2001, a major part of Manhattans skyline vanished. Before the tragic events of that day, New York has been the
object of a love-hate relationship with the rest of the country. Its skyline had set the stage for innumerable motion pictures that showed the

ontemporary independent American and non-American films distributed in the United States have emerged
as a distinct system of representation formulated in the expanse between principles of Hollywood popular film and alternative cinematic practices. Cinema & Culture considers independent film as an
industry, a set of institutions, a discursive
formation, and a specific series of texts.
Investigating the consumption side of the
spectrum (distribution, reception, textual analysis), attention is focused on narrative films released theatrically in the United States by nonstudio distributors between 1980 and 2001. The category independent film is
analyzed as the function of multiple, simultaneous, layered, and interacting discourses: representational, institutional, interpretive, and cultural/historical. Under exploration is the extent to which independent
film as a distinct cultural formation is able to represent the stories, perspectives, and experiences of a pluralistic, multicultural society.

rench film design throughout the 1930s was not just descriptive,
but also expressive: sets were not merely part of the background,
but were vital components of a films overall atmosphere, impact and
critical afterlife. This was a period when sets were ripped open, as
painted backdrops were replaced by three-dimensional constructions
to ensure greater proximity to reality. Accomplished set designers such
as Alexandre Trauner, Jacques Krauss and Eugne Louri crafted a series of designs both realist and expressionistic that brought out the underlying themes of a films narrative and helped create an exportable
vision of Frenchness that influenced other European and American
film design practices.
This book details the elaborate paraphrasing tendencies of French
film design in the 1930s. The author explores the crucial role of the set
designer in the films evolutionary process and charts how the rapid development of studio practices enabled designers to become progressively more ambitious. The book examines key films such as Quatorze
juillet (1932), Un Carnet de bal (1937), La Grande illusion (1937) and Le Jour
se lve (1939) to demonstrate how set design works at establishing time
and place, generating audience familiarity and recognition and underpinning each films visual style.

he films of Aki and Mika Kaurismki are part of a globalising Finnish cinema, challenging conventional parameters at every turn.
This work examines the films that the Kaurismkis produced, individually and in collaboration, between 1981 and 1995 films which mobilise various methods to reflect, criticise, counteract and contribute to
the globalisation of Finnish society in the era of late capitalist development. This work provides an in-depth analysis of these films, exploring the aesthetic and narrative content of the films as well as their production and reception in Finland. The theoretical scope of the work situates the films not only in the field of transnational cinema, but also
that of post-national cinema. Exploring the Kaurismkis films in a
post-national framework points to new, emergent understandings of
both the fragility and the persistence of national culture and identity
in a globalising world.

ore than twenty years after its collapse in 1989, the Berlin Wall remains a symbol of the vigour with which
communist East Germany kept out the corrupting influences of neighbouring West
Germany. However, despite the restrictions,
a surprising number of artistic works, including international films, did cross the
Wall and reach audiences in the wide network of cinemas in East Germany. This
book takes a fresh look at cinema as a social and cultural phenomenon in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and analyses the transnational film relations between East Germany and the rest
of the world. Drawing on a range of new archival material, the author explores which films were imported from the West, what criteria were applied in their selection, how they were received by the national press and
film audiences, and how these imports related to DEFA (East German) cinema. The author places DEFA films alongside the international films exhibited in the GDR and argues that film in East Germany was actually
more transnational in character than previously thought.
(Anne Barnert, sehepunkte)

he role of space and place in the creation of visual narratives constitutes one of the most dynamic and exciting debates in contemporary film studies. How does film construct space? What are the spatial codes and strategies that it uses? What is the relationship between
space and time in film? How do spatial constructs enable us to understand new concepts of identity and the politics and geographies of exile and displacement? Such questions, whose importance to contemporary film and culture is fundamental, are explored in wide-ranging,
challenging essays that re-evaluate and extend recent theoretical debate in relation to the regional and national cinemas of Europe.
Alongside critical essays by scholars of international repute the
book contains original contributions by practising film directors. Characterised by its interdisciplinary, cross-national focus, it is thematically
structured to provide an insight into smaller and less well-explored cin-

his study focuses on thirteen Hollywood films that, from the 1970s
to the 1990s, assumed to represent the working practices of U.S.
corporate broadcast media. The book argues that since such corporations position themselves as individuals before the law, so their film
and news texts are carefully authored rhetorical manoeuvres. The structured genre analysis is also enriched by contextual histories which consider relevant legal, institutional and political interventions in the early
development of the U.S. public media. This interdisciplinary approach
is relevant in a study of film texts which themselves address vital contemporary concerns in media ownership, gender representation, mergers, free speech, new technologies, and the powers of market journalism itself. This book is designed, therefore, to serve the related interests of media educationalists, specialists in film, and students of U.S.
media law and broadcast news histories.

Frauen erscheinen in positiver Perspektive. Weibliche Erwerbsttigkeit

kommerziellen Tourneeunternehmen vorgestellt.

he aim of this volume is to apply the findings of volume 1, the actor-character relationship in documentary evidence of Elizabethans, to a set of plays particularly teasing to the visual sense: the female page plays, in which a boy actor presents a female character in
male disguise. The study concludes that such transformations were often intentionally deceiving. As a consequence, the homoerotic aspect
deserves further consideration, which results in an analysis of the ways
in which male sexual disguise and feminine men or boys were related
in the power structure of Elizabethan society as expressed in (literary)
texts. A detailed analysis of the individual plays points out where, when,
and how authors used the device of the female page, distinguishing between the several theatres and groups in Elizabethan London.

rofessor Christensens insightful study is an original piece of research that contributes to our understanding of film adaptations
and what happens when women characters in literary texts become
women characters in films. The method to do detailed comparative
analyses of eight novels/films, two each from the 1930s, 1960s, and

adaptations have changed over time without sacrificing the meticulous

Ist das sinnvoll? Da, wo es um die knstlerische Gestaltung geht, sicher;

Horvths seemingly casual style conceals a highly sophisticated and

his book examines film versions of Irish myth, lore, and legend,
concentrating particularly on stories which encompass the life
journey of the hero, as proposed by Carl Jung and adapted by Joseph
Campbell. After establishing the usefulness of film as cultural critique,
the author provides intertextual and comparative readings of a number
of films which follow a heros journey. The stages of this journey include
the childs struggle to achieve identity and become a responsible member of the community, the adults ability to move beyond the self and
fall in love with another, and the community members willingness to
sacrifice self in the service of Ireland. In addition, the study examines
the lore of matchmaking and the communal uses of legend creation, as
well as providing an ironic reading of the heroic journey through an
exploration of the contemporary anti-hero. The films analysed include
Into the West, The Secret of Roan Inish, In America, The Quiet Man, The

his book explores the linguistic nature of American movie conversation, pointing out its resemblances to faceto-face conversation. The reason for such
an investigation lies in the fact that movie
language is traditionally considered to be
non-representative of spontaneous language. The book presents a corpus-driven
study of the similarities between face-toface and movie conversation, using detailed consideration of individual lexical
phrases and linguistic features as well as
Bibers Multi-Dimensional Analysis (1998).
The data from an existing spoken American English corpus the Longman Spoken American Corpus is compared to the American Movie
Corpus, a corpus of American movie conversation purposely built for
the research. On the basis of evidence from these corpora, the book
shows that contemporary movie conversation does not differ significantly from face-to-face conversation, and can therefore be legitimately
used to study and teach natural spoken language.

oreign Devils investigates representations of exile in Hollywood cinema from 1930 to 1956 through the films of Peter Lorre, Bla Lugosi,
and Conrad Veidt. This book dispels the assumption that by virtue of its
hegemonic, reactionary, and exclusionary modes of representation, otherness is excluded from or only obliquely alluded to in classical Hollywood cinema. This book contends that Hollywood uses European migr actors to speak of the experience of exile and the often-futile exilic
attempts at integration into the host nation.
This original, cross-disciplinary study incorporates a number of research interests in film studies specifically Hollywood cinema, exile and
migr filmmakers, the Golden Age of the studio system, the Universal
Horror cycle, and Poverty Row filmmaking. Foreign Devils combines the
close reading of key texts with a theoretical framework that encompasses
body theory and theories of space and nation with historical accounts of
immigration to the United States and American concepts of nationhood
through the symbolism of blood and death studies.
Film studies students and academics, both undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as scholars in other disciplines, and anyone with an interest in Hollywood cinema, Central European culture in the 1930s-1950s,
and European emigration to the United States will benefit from reading
this book. Foreign Devils is also a valuable resource for courses in Hollywood filmmaking, migr film, exile, Central European culture, nationalism studies, and Jewish studies.

his study of Japanese political culture from c. 1940 to 2009 challenges standard periodizations of postwar Japan, arguing that the
postwar period began, much later than previously argued, when a culture of pacifism developed. We can see evidence of this in feature films
from the era and in the activities of groups involved in film promotion
and criticism. Film and Political Culture in Postwar Japan asks us to take
Japanese pacifism seriously and not assume that it is merely a passing
phenomenon. This study of the political left questions previous assumptions about such marginalization after the Red Purges of 1950 and the
sectarian infighting of the 1960s. Michael H. Gibbs provokes the reader
to look beyond the standard national parameters of Japanese culture,
to examine the role of other states in fomenting war during the 1940s
1970s and in keeping the subsequent peace. In addition, he challenges
the neglect of mainstream Japanese film criticism in English-language
scholarship, focusing on many filmmakers seen as important in Japanese
film culture but relatively little discussed in the west. Gibbs sets the canon
of Great Japanese Directors to one side and focuses on the work of
Kinoshita, Yamamoto, Masumura, Kuroki, Yamada, Higashi, Negishi,
Sakamoto, and Nishikawa. Scholars and students of Japanese and East
Asian history, film, war and peace studies, and comparative and world
history should find this volume of great interest.

he last three decades have witnessed the proliferation of gay/lesbian-themed films both on our screens and at international film

gone far beyond the boundaries of countries with a multicultural tradition and now reaches many territories, including the French-speaking world. What is the narrative and thematic originality of such films

sing the example of the fundamental American film genre, the Western, this book sets out to evaluate modern Hollywood on the basis of aesthetic,
industrial, and ideological factors by the
comparison of its formative stage New
Hollywood (1967-1976) with its contemporary make up Hollywood Now (2001now). The centerpiece of the book is the
analysis of a broad range of Westerns, incorporating roughly 100 films and presenting fresh perspectives on classics like
The Wild Bunch and Little Big Man, but also
discussing neglected films like Billy Two Hats and Bad Company, and
modern films such as Brokeback Mountain and No Country for Old Men.
A main argument is that the Western has developed from a predominantly conservative genre in classical Hollywood to a medium for artistic innovation and subversive political implications in New Hollywood to a cultural artifact that bespeaks a self-reflexive scrutiny of
cinematic artifice in Hollywood Now.

eel Diversity: A Teachers Sourcebook is a resource manual for teachers who want to infuse the concepts of diversity and social justice
into their secondary and college courses. Lecturers and workshop presenters will also appreciate this text for its practical uses. The authors
present proven guidelines for teaching diversity using a framework that
deconstructs national opinion and culture from both majority and minority perspectives. Emphasizing the development of a shared language
among teachers and learners, the text provides a list of important definitions about difference and power. It discusses the role of the teacher in
minimizing cultural dominance, prejudice, and discrimination in society. The text includes an extensive section on designing a diversity education course, and teachers will benefit from the suggested instructional
activities, readings, assignments, and advice on creating a classroom atmosphere for these issues. More than just another book on film literacy
and criticism, this manual stands out from the competition for its practical, user-friendly mini-lessons using film clips from mainstream Hollywood feature films to illustrate the 25 diversity definitions provided in
the text, and develops a list of questions following each clip that can be
used to encourage cross-cultural dialogue.

During the 1920s Man Ray made four short experimental films and
collaborated on a host of other projects with people such as Marcel
Duchamp, Fernand Lger, Ren Clair and Hans Richter. These works,
along with a series of cinematic essays and home movies made during
the 1920s and 1930s, represent the most important contribution to the
development of an alternative mode of filmmaking in the early twentieth century. This book explores Man Rays cinematic interactions from
the perspective of his interdisciplinary artistic sensibility, creating links
between film, photography, painting, poetry, music, architecture, dance
and sculpture. By exposing his preoccupation with form, and his ambiguous relationship with the politics and aesthetics of the Dada and
Surrealist movements, the author paints an intimate and complex portrait of Man Ray the filmmaker.

rench film design throughout the 1930s was not just descriptive, but
also expressive: sets were not merely part of the background, but
were vital components of a films overall atmosphere, impact and critical afterlife. This was a period when sets were ripped open, as painted
backdrops were replaced by three-dimensional constructions to ensure
greater proximity to reality. Accomplished set designers such as Alexandre
Trauner, Jacques Krauss and Eugne Louri crafted a series of designs
both realist and expressionistic that brought out the underlying themes
of a films narrative and helped create an exportable vision of Frenchness that influenced other European and American film design practices.
This book details the elaborate paraphrasing tendencies of French film
design in the 1930s. The author explores the crucial role of the set designer in the films evolutionary process and charts how the rapid development of studio practices enabled designers to become progressively
more ambitious. The book examines key films such as Quatorze juillet
(1932), Un Carnet de bal (1937), La Grande illusion (1937) and Le Jour se lve
(1939) to demonstrate how set design works at establishing time and place,

eel Schools takes a fresh look at the history of Australian schooling through the lens of Australian cinema from the silent era until 2010. In exploring the relationship between cinematic representation and educational history, Josephine May shows how numerous Australian feature and documentary films offer access to powerful
vernacular imaginings about school education in Australia. May argues
that the cinematic school is a pervasive metaphor for the Australian nation. She demonstrates that, while Australian films about schooling
have consistently commented on the relationship of schooling to the
Australian class structure, they also increasingly explored gender, race
and ethnicity at school, especially after the 1970s. From then on the
egalitarian dream of school education and the nations capacity to generate meaningful futures for the young became increasingly contested.

ilmmaker Bill Forsyth is one of the most important and fondly regarded of all living Scottish artists. His filmmaking career, beginning with That Sinking Feeling (1979), paved the way for the emergence
of an indigenous Scottish cinema. It also established Forsyth as one of
the most distinctive and original voices in late twentieth-century European film. This book offers the first integrated and comprehensive study
of the directors complete uvre. Through extended textual analysis and
contextual discussion of each of Forsyths eight features, it traces the key
formal and thematic characteristics of a remarkable career, one which
encompasses both three-figure production budgets in Glasgow and multimillion-dollar adventures in the heart of Hollywood. The book also uses
Forsyths films to explore the diverse range of film industrial contexts
the director has worked within. Most importantly, it sheds light upon the
hitherto under-documented zero-budget travails of 1970s Scotland and
inflated expectations of early-1980s British film.

he essay film a form that thinks serves to create a self-reflexive space for contemporary society by challenging expectations
and demanding the creative involvement of the spectator. Using film
to provoke thought has never been more important than now, when
non-fiction films are gaining in popularity and playing a growing part
in debates about culture and politics. This timely publication argues
that the appeal of the essay film lies primarily in the dialogic engagement with the spectator and the richness of the intellectual and artistic debate it stimulates.
The book focuses on the work of three key European film directors
associated with the essay film: Chris Marker, Harun Farocki and Jos
Luis Guern. It provides a detailed analysis of several films by each director, exploring the relationship between dialogism and essayism in
their work and placing this in the wider context of debates on the cinematic essay as a genre. Central aspects of essayistic filmmaking are
explored, including its radical approach to knowledge, its distinctive
patterns of subjectivity, its challenging of the formal representation of
reality, and its contribution to new understandings of spectatorship.
Written with clarity and perception, this volume offers new insights

As, arranca con

raditional detective fiction celebrates the victory of order and reason over the senseless violence of crime. Yet in spite of its apparent
valorization of rationality, the detective genre has been associated from
its inception with three paradoxical motifs the double, the labyrinth
and the locked room. Rational thought relies on binary oppositions, such
as chaos and order, appearance and reality or truth and falsehood. Paradoxes subvert such customary distinctions, logically proving as true what
we experientially know to be false.
The present book explores detective and crime-mystery fiction and
film from the perspective of their entrenched metaphors of paradox. This
new and intriguing angle yields fresh insights into a genre that has become one of the hallmarks of postmodernism.

ore than twenty years after its collapse in 1989, the Berlin Wall remains a symbol of the vigour with which
communist East Germany kept out the
corrupting influences of neighbouring
West Germany. However, despite the restrictions, a surprising number of artistic works, including international films,
did cross the Wall and reach audiences
in the wide network of cinemas in East
Germany. This book takes a fresh look at
cinema as a social and cultural phenomenon in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and analyses the transnational film relations between East
Germany and the rest of the world. Drawing on a range of new archival
material, the author explores which films were imported from the West,
what criteria were applied in their selection, how they were received by
the national press and film audiences, and how these imports related
to DEFA (East German) cinema. The author places DEFA films alongside
the international films exhibited in the GDR and argues that film in
East Germany was actually more trans-national in character than previously thought.
(Anne Barnert, sehepunkte)

ince the late 1990s, German cinema has gone through a period of
astonishing productivity and success that has made it the focus of
scholarly analysis once more. What can contemporary German cinema
tell us about current German society and its problems? What are the
distinguishing features of filmmaking in Germany today?
This book analyses the representation of individual and collective
behaviour in post-unification German cinema. It looks at performances
of gender, ethnicity and nationality in a wide range of contemporary
German films. Using Performance Theory as a framework, the book discusses how modern German identities are presented as conformist, liberating or subversive responses to external challenges.
Theoretical considerations regarding the efficacy of performance
and the dialectical relationship between transgression, resistance and
normalization form the background for an analysis that investigates
contemporary German films in terms of their function within the restructuring of post-unification German society.

he book addresses the problem of literary value in North American literature, childrens literature, film and poetry. Chapter One:
The Ennob(e)led focuses on institutions which are instrumental in attributing value to literature: literary critics (e.g. D.H. Lawrence) and
award givers (e.g. the Swedish Academy). It explores W.B. Yeatss, T.S.
Eliots, Czesaw Mioszs and William Goldings lives with the Nobel
Prize. In Chapter Two: The Forgotten homage is paid to four authors who
lost popularity, or never enjoyed it: Lorenza Stevens Berbineau, Frank

and other ethnic voices in Canadian childrens literature. Chapter Four:
From Mainstream to Margin juxtaposes scholarly pursuits with cinematic praxis, and cinematic praxis with political activity.

he volume explores selected relations between visual and verbal aspects of film, drama, literature and biography. The chapters deal with such areas
as film adaptations, remakes, ekphrasis,
photography and the novel, feminist rewritings, acts of iconoclasm in postcolonial drama, and biographical studies.
Adopting a variety of methodologies, each
of the contributors draws a link between
the particular and the general, a text or a
picture at hand and a mechanism that pro
duces or annihilates meanings. Some big
literary names surface in the book, most notably William Shakespeare
and Henry James, but forgotten and marginalized writers and artists,
such as old Irish poets, Wyndham Lewis, Stefan Themerson, feminist
and postcolonial dramatists are also brought into the limelight.

his anthology provides an insight into Latin American sociocultural life and history as expressed by the medium of film. After
an overview about the Socio-political Cinema in Latin America, the subsequent articles spotlight socio-historical and cinematic topics such as
Film and History, Guerilla Filmmaking and Indigenous Cinema. The following essays aim at presenting paradigmatically selected nations with
their rich and turbulent histories and at providing the opportunity for
more detailed discussion of some of the fascinating Latin American
film-makers. Finally, various reviews of mainly contemporary films focusing on socio-critical aspects complete this volume.

his book gives an account of the significance of the rogue in contemporary British literature and culture, focusing on this characters survival and metamorphosis from the second half of the 20th century onwards. While the character of the rogue is most often associated with the
16th and 17th centuries, the author focuses on contemporary literary texts,
as well as cinematographic adaptations. She discusses the revival of the
rogue mainly in the 1950s, adopting a comparative approach, establishing connections to other fields of representation besides literature.
Thus, the originality of this book lies in its interdisciplinary nature.
The focus on contemporary writers who have put the character of the
rogue at the forefront in their works, particularly Martin Amis and Irvine
Welsh, and the authors awareness of the socio-political circumstances in
which the books were written, adds substantially to our understanding of
the rogue character.
Ana Raquel Lourenco Fernandess book is a superb piece of work. Rooted
in very thorough scholarship, the book is also written in a very clear
and accessible language, as well as being playful in its arrangement of
texts and paratexts. [...] The book is an excellent toolbox for any reader
interested in literature that tackles the subversive, as it simply touches
on all the significant aspects worth paying attention to in this genre.

Unmittelbar darauf erscheint Friedrich
Drrenmatts dritter Kriminalroman Das
bisher unverffentlichter Textzeugen, drei Grafiken, fnf Plakatentwrfe
