HAMILTON COUNTY PROSECUTOR JOSEPH T. DETERS

ANNOUNCES NO CHARGES IN JANUARY 12th SHOOTING OF 14YEAR-OLD BOY.
Father mistakes son for intruder.
Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced that no
charges would be filed against the father who shot and killed his 14-year-old
son yesterday at their residence on Blanchard Street in Price Hill.
The father called 911 yesterday morning at approximately 6:30 a.m. to
report that his 14-year-old son, Georta Mack, had been shot.
According to the father, when Georta left for school earlier that morning,
dad watched him walk to the bus stop and saw the bus leave. Dad then tried
to text Georta to confirm that he was on the bus when Georta called him to
say that he was on the bus.
A short time later, dad said that he heard noises in the home. Concerned that
someone might have broken into their home, dad got a .45 revolver and
began searching the single family residence.
When dad was in the basement, he opened a closet door. Georta was in the
closet and yelled Boo. The father said that he was startled when he fired a
single shot. The shot hit Georta in the neck. Georta was transported to
Childrens Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The 72-year-old father has no prior criminal record.

Prosecutor Deters commented, There is only one word for this - - tragedy.
It is impossible to imagine how horrible this father must feel for mistaking
his son for an intruder. All of the forensic evidence matches what the father
told the police, and, therefore, no charges are appropriate.
