Briana Ibarra, Period 2, 01/13/16

WHAT IS FIBROUS DYSPLASIA?

Fibrous Dysplasia iis a disorder that causes scar-like tissue to begin
forming on the bones.
It weakens the bone and creates fractures in it.
It is a genetic disorder.
If an individual experiences this inn multiple bones, it normally
begins before the age of ten.
It normally affects only one bone and most commonly affects:
The skull
long bone of the arm
long bone of the leg

IS IT CURABLE?
FIbrous Dysplasia is not curable, but is treatable.
Fractures in the bones can be treated with just a simple cast.
If a fracture is likely to occur, many doctors suggest that surgery
be performed.
Surgery is also suggested in order to correct the shape of the
bone.

HOW IS FIBROUS DYSPLASIA

CAUSED?
As discussed before, Fibrous Dysplasia is a genetic disorder. The
cause has yet to be discovered
It is believed that the cause is due to an irregularity in a specific
bone protein.
Another believed cause is a genetic mutation present at birth.
It is not believed to be an inherited trait.

WHO CAN GET IT?

The disease occurs in both males and females.
No particular race is affected more than others
It occurs in individuals from all over the globe.
I repeat, the disorder is not hereditary nor I s it "contagious"
Though the cause to the disease is unknown, it is believed to be a
genetic mutation, meaning that no matter the person, there is a
chance of ANYONE being susceptible to it.
The disorder is rare.
One out of every 15,000 are diagnosed with FD.
Between 9-18 thousands individuals have been diagnosed in the US.

WHAT'S GOING ON INSIDE THE

BODY?
The scar tissue formed on the bones is referred to as a tumor. (No,
it does not make this disorder a cancer.)
Many with FD have association with endocrine (hormonal)
problems
There is commonly areas of the skin with increased pigment
referred to as "caf-au-lait marks"
The bone lesions tend to remain on one side of the body.
