isfateanddestiny.Fromtheprologue,itis
madeclearthatRomeoandJulietarefatedtofallinlove,andthattheirdestinywastobring
peacetoVeronathroughtheirowngrievousdeaths.Thequoteusedfromtheplay,Some
consequenceyethanginginthestars,issaidbyRomeotoBenvoliojustbeforetheyenter
Capuletsparty(1.4.114).Hecanfeelthatsomethingisabouttohappen,andisinfactrightthat
thepartywillsetoffachainofeventsthatwillendinhisowndemise.Throughouttheplay,
variousotherinstancesofdestinycanbeseen,likewhenRomeocriesoutthatheisfortunes
foolafterkillingTybalt,whichinsinuatesthathewasfatedtokillTybaltandtherewasnothing
hecouldhavedonetopreventit(3.1.142).Thisoriginalsonnethelpstoexplainthepurposeof
fateintheplayinthefirsttwostanzas.Itshowshowthedestinyofthetwoloverswastobring
aboutagoodchange,andquestionshowmuchofRomeosandJulietsactionswereactually
theirownfreewill.Thethirdstanzaelaboratesonthatideabyaskingifallpeople,inreallife
andinfiction,haveadestiny.Itcontinuestoaskwhypeoplecanbefaultedfortheiractionsat
all,iftheycanjustblameitonfate,andthenquestionswhetherdestinyrelievesthesenseofduty
andobligationorjustmakesitheavier.TherhymingcoupletshowsthatforRomeoandJuliet,
theydidnothaveachoiceorfreewill,butwererequiredtodowhatfatewantedofthem.
