Data Analysis

Section 1: Overview of Students

The assessment for the data I used was from a 2nd grade language arts
class. The dynamics of my class is very broad. I have 11 boys and 8 girls. Six
of my students are Quest (gifted) students, eight students are in Tier 2 on
the pyramid of intervention, two students are in Tier 3 on the pyramid of
intervention, and one student is being served in special education. The
students ages range from seven to nine years old.
Section 2 Test Objective
In second grade students language skills will grow exponentially.
Simple sentences grow into compound sentences and descriptive words
takes the students writing to the next level. The Common Core Standards
are rigorous- young writers are expected to use information from provided
sources to answer questions and to conduct shared research and writing
projects. Students should be able use action verbs, nouns, adjectives,
adverbs, sentence order, and temporal words to clearly put events in order.
The assessment used to conduct a data analysis was taken from an
assessment booklet that is used with the basal reading series, Journeys. The
test was given in a 2nd grade language arts class. The test also included
nouns as a part of speech. The objectives of this test measured students
ability to identify action verbs in a sentence at 100% accuracy.

Section 3 Descriptive Analysis

The mean of the data is 9.05, the standard deviation is 1.486779, and the
median is 9. The data clearly shows that 6 of my students mastered the
concept of action verbs at 100%. 11 of my students mastered the concept of
action verbs at 90%. One student mastered action verbs at 80%, and one
student only mastered action verbs at 60%.

Spearman-Brown Reliability
The format of the test was 10 multiple choice questions identifying the action
verbs in each sentence. According to the data of the test, the test was not
very reliable. I am not sure if it was due to the small sample of questions or
the test format. I also feel that next time I should use a variety of DOK
questions because so many students scored so well on the test.

Section 4 Reliability
Looking at the data and the number of questions missed, question 9 seemed
to be the question students missed the most. I took a look at the question to
see what the misunderstanding was. The students chose a word that could
be a verb or a noun depending on the part of speech it was used in the
sentence. The word they chose was paint, but in the sentence the word paint
was the noun and not the verb.

Section 5 Conclusion Analysis

Overall, 18 of my students have a strong understanding of action verbs.
Student J was the only student I observed that has not mastered action
verbs. After reviewing the scores and the test questions, Student J seemed to
choose the noun in the sentence rather than the verb. Student J obviously
has the two concepts confused.
Section 6 Instructional Improvement Plan
The week before I taught verbs I taught the concept of nouns. I will reteach action verbs and
nouns with my student that did not master the concept of verbs. I will use a noun and verb sort
center to reteach the student. I will also allow her to use ABCYA, an online program, to allow
her to practice the concepts. I will retest her over action verbs. I will review and reteach the
different parts of speech with all students. We will do an assignment that requires the students to
identify the parts of speech. The students will identify the subject, predicate, nouns, and verb in
the sentence. I will review subject and predicate because it helps when finding the verb and
nouns in a sentence.
