DIY #9

When people move, or migrate, it can affect many things in a region. The
land, resources, culture, and economy can all change. Natural resources, jobs,
education, and water will PULL people into an area to live. People can also be
PUSHED into an area to live. Things like family, no jobs, or war can cause people
to be PUSHED to move.
Effects of Migration

Cultural Blending

Urbanization

Cultural blending happens when people from different cultures move to

the same place and live close together. Their cultures mix and blend. This can
influence the art, music, clothing, food, and language of a place. We will learn
more about this when we learn about culture.
Urbanization happens when cities grow larger and spread into nearby
area. The reason for this is migration, particularly when people move into cities
for jobs. As urbanization occurs, transportation and trade centers grow, and more
services are needed. This means jobs become available for people in the
medicine, education, housing, and food sectors.
Urbanization is happening all over the world. In some areas, cities grow
until they reach other cities and connect with them. A megalopolis is a huge city
or cluster of cities with an extremely large population. As residents of McKinney,
we are part of the Dallas/Fort Worth megalopolis.
When a city begins to grow, it needs infrastructure. Infrastructure is a
term architects, engineers, and urban planners use to describe essential
facilities, services, and organizational structures for cities and communities.
Infra- means below, and sometimes these elements are literally underground,
like water and natural gas supply systems. In modern environments,
infrastructure is thought to be any facility we expect but don't think about because
it works for us in the background, below our radar.
Infrastructure can include:

Roads and bridges

Mass-transit systems (e.g., trains and rails)
Air control towers
Telephone lines and cellphone towers
Dams and reservoirs
Levees and pumping stations
Waterways, canals, and ports
Electrical power lines and connections (i.e., the national power grid)

McKinney is adding to the infrastructure of the city. Here is a video about the
road construction, which has been happening for several years.

When cities begin adding infrastructure, they modify the physical
environment. This is happening in McKinney right now. As McKinney grows,
more streets are added, made larger, and areas of land and trees are replaced
with housing or businesses.
Watch this video, which shows how the people of Panama modified their
environment to create a canal.

What about life in the desert? How do people survive? They need water;
however, there is little water found in a desert.
Here are 2 videos about deserts and how people manage to live and grow things
in the desert.

Did you know?
Mining is a form of modifying and changing an environment. When mining
happens, things are dug out of the earth and the area where the digging happens
will never be the same again. There are concerns with mining and not only what
it does to the land, but what the effects can be on humans.
