Dr. Bennet Omalu: [from trailer] Tell the truth! Tell the truth!

Dr. Bennet Omalu: When I was a boy, heaven was here,

[gestures with hand]
Dr. Bennet Omalu: and America was here.
[gestures slightly lower]
Dr. Bennet Omalu: You could be anything, you could do anything - I never wanted
anything as much as I wanted to be an American.
Dr. Cyril Wecht: The NFL owns a day of the week. The same day the Church used
to own. Now it's theirs.

Will Smith stars in Concussion, a dramatic thriller based on the incredible true
David vs. Goliath story of American immigrant Dr. Bennet Omalu, the brilliant
forensic neuropathologist who made the first discovery of CTE, a football-related
brain trauma, in a pro player and fought for the truth to be known. Omalu's
emotional quest puts him at dangerous odds with one of the most powerful
institutions in the world. Written by Sony Pictures Entertainment
If you have an opportunity to see the film CONCUSSION", just do it. The
cinematic elements alone make it worth while.
Will Smith has long demonstrated that he is an entertaining actor who does
the work and brings his best to a performance. His nuanced performance as
the highly accomplished Doctor Bennet Omalu reflects how he has grown as
an actor and is destined for critical greatness to complement his commercial
success. Gugu Mbatha Raw as Prema Mutiso demonstrated that she too was
capable of a performance imbued with subtleties and strength of character.
It was refreshing to see the two of them in roles that test their metal as actors,
portraying people from varied backgrounds facing an unforgiving challenge
and holding on to their beliefs and values. It was nice to see what Will Smith
and Gugu Mbatha Raw work with artfully constructed character development.

The writing and directing of Peter Landesman was equally impressive and
reflected a deft touch--notwithstanding forces and elements seeking to silence
the effort. At the end of the day, the visuals speak for themselves as they
quietly show an ominous yet penetrating message that permeates college, high
school and youth football culture to the exclusion of none. The message is clear
even though the villains retain some degree of plausible deniability. Analogies
are drawn to other merchants of death making public denials of culpability
while under legal and social attack for the carnage they wrought. This is a
story that needs to be told--even to those in power who would prefer that it not.

Granted, there is more to be told and to be exposed. The true story in Concussion
seemed to stop just short of the National Football League (NFL) agreeing with
the good doctor; while opting for further study of the problem, better equipment
designed to address it --if not further obfuscate it--and disclosure of the risks at
every level seemed sufficient penance. As though the knowledge of the risk and
accepting the risk for a reward will make it socially and morally okay.
