Unit 3 Plan- Fur Trade Step One: What are the desired learning results of this unit? (benchmarks that address content) 6.4.4.16.1 Describe European exploration, competition and trade in the upper Mississippi River region; describe varied interactions between Minnesota's indigenous peoples and Europeans in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Step Two: What essential question(s) will anchor students to learning? (one or more that ‘summarize benchmark) 644.161 1. Desoribe the different jobs involved in the fur trade. 2. Explain how the Fur Trade was a global (world-wide) activity. What countries were involved, what items they traded, and why did they trade? 3. Explain three ways the fur trade changed the lives of the Native Americans living in Minnesota? Big Idea: The French and the British came to Minnesota looking to trade beaver furs with the Native ‘Americans. This European contact with the Native Americans greatly changed their traditional way of life. Lesson 1: Thinking about Fur Trade Opening Question: What are items that people buy today and why? Activity: 1. Pretest 2. Partner work worksheet- Let's Think about the Fur Trade + Land of Sky-Blue Waters Reading Lesson 2: True North Mapping Lesson (takes about 2 days) 1. Must use LearnPad or computer—to see the maps and student write answers on paper 2. Google: True North Mapping Minnesota's History—Fur Trade: Exchanging Worlds 3. Complete the first two or three pages together (this lesson is a challenge so model how to use the maps and the reading on each page to answer questions) 4. Have students complete this with partners and then go over answers together on the board Lesson 3: Fur Trade through Pictures Activity: 1. Analyze Fur Trade Pictures rotation activity—Directions on PowerPoint Lesson 4: Fur Trade Textbook Reading 1. Read textbook handout with partner + complete worksheet Lesson 5: Complete Fur Trading Cards 1. Have each student pick a Native America Trade item and a European Trade item to complete a trade card. You may want to walk through the questions with students and your expectations for their answers. Lesson 6: Fur Trade Simulation 1. Preparation: Have fur trade printed items and posters of each country involved in hanging around room. 2. Give each student a fur trade job card- tell them to memorize their duties (there will be a repeat of jobs) 3. Play fur trade people bingo — first with filled card= winner 4, Then ask for student volunteers: 5 for each fur trade item and then one person for each job 5, Re-read with students textbook reading under the heading Business of Trading a. Put each fur trade item person by the country they originated from . Act out the fur trade process with each person doing their job 6. Watch: Youtube- Fur Trade Video by Mr. H (14minutes) Lesson 7: Test Optional Lesson: George and the Voyageurs Reading Opening Question: Would you make a good voyageur? Why or why not?
