Our focus

Shaw Trust is one of the UKs largest third

sector providers of employment services for
people at disadvantage or with a disability,
health problem or impairment.
In 2012 we were further strengthened by
merging with leading welfare to work charity
Careers Development Group (CDG) to form
a charity building on the successes of both
organisations.
We believe everyone has the right to work,
inclusion and independence. Thats been our
vision for over thirty years, helping us improve
the lives of nearly half a million people with
disabilities or at disadvantage. Our mission is
to help them gain life and employability skills so
they can secure sustainable work and actively
contribute to family and community life.

impairments. Shaw Trust is one of only two third

sector prime providers in the UK and the only
charity in London awarded a prime contract to
deliver Work Programme, the governments
flagship back to work scheme.
The charity also delivers a number of learning
and skills contracts as well as a range of
community, health and enterprise projects
which help clients gain employability skills.
We are focused on three strategic areas:
employment services, skills and education, and
rehabilitation of offenders.

Employment services
As a national charity, Shaw Trust has the
commercial experience of delivering largescale UK-wide contracts, as well as meeting
the specific requirements of local and regional
commissioners. Following the merger with
CDG, Shaw Trust has over 200 centres and
1,400 staff across the UK.
Were one of the governments lead partners
in the delivery of national employment
programmes. We are the largest prime provider
of Work Choice, the specialist programme for
people with a disabilities, health problems and

Who we are, what we do

In year two of Work Choice, we doubled the

number of people we supported back to work
and the most recent Work Programme results
place CDG as the fifth-best performing provider
out of forty in the second year of delivery.
Our focus will be on continuous improvement
and supporting more and more people back into
employment. Our business development team
has an ongoing programme of product and
service innovation to continually review how
we can better support hardest-to-help groups;
including those with disabilities, impairments
and health problems, as well as ex-offenders.

Were also looking to the future

Our recently-launched Making Work a Real
Choice consultation, which accompanied our
report of the same name, examines the future
of specialist disability employment programmes
for people with disabilities, health problems and
impairments. Our focus will be on using the
findings to shape and influence the services of
the future.

In addition, we will be working with our partners

and stakeholders to broaden the opportunities
of apprenticeships and vocational training to
participants on both Work Choice and Work
Programme.

We have an award-winning volunteer initiative

CDG Volunteers, which is part of our Work
Programme delivery and the emphasis
will be on the integration and expansion of
this initiative across Shaw Trust offices and
contracts. We have already seen volunteers in
and around London donate just under 8,000
hours of mentoring support to our clients last
year.

Rehabilitation of ex-offenders

As part of the Shaw Trust UK network, we

have a number of community, health and social
enterprise projects. Our focus is on aligning
every project to employability whether that be
work experience, vocational training or stepping
stone employment opportunities and building
strong links with contracts such as Work Choice
and Work Programme.

Our focus is to build partnerships that can bid

for the new opportunities being proposed by
the Ministry of Justice. We aim to develop an
innovative delivery model that not only supports
these new opportunities, but also enhances our
Work Programme delivery.

Skills and education

We know that skills, accreditation and
qualifications improve employment prospects.
Our focus will be on increasing the number
of training opportunities and qualifications
available to our clients at Shaw Trust offices,
projects and shops, in order to improve
employability.

Shaw Trust is fully aware that unemployment

is a key factor that can lead to reoffending.
Additionally, having a criminal record is a major
barrier to work.

As part of our innovation in this area we will

further develop our community, health and
social enterprise projects because we believe
they can add real value to the area.

...They get people back into work, but also

help them with the rest of their life too...
The service is individually tailored for each
client, theres not a set flowchart...

Employment services
Shaw Trust is one of the UKs lead providers
of employability services. That means we
help individuals to find work, stay in work
and take a more inclusive role at home and
in their local community.
Our services include advice about careers,
training or applying for jobs. Our employer
engagement teams work in partnership with
businesses throughout the country to ensure a
better understanding of the value of a diverse
workforce and create opportunities for our
clients.
Our enterprises such as recycling and
horticultural schemes provide experience
for those who find it difficult to participate in a
formal work environment. We also run over 45
shops across the country, which provide work
experience opportunities for those getting back
into work.

Work Programme
Work Programme is the governments primary
welfare to work scheme to help people
overcome barriers that prevent them from finding
and staying in work.
Further to its recent merger with Careers
Development Group (CDG), Shaw Trust is now
one of only two third sector prime providers in
the UK and the only charity in London awarded
a prime contract.
We know that long-term unemployment
presents a barrier to work in itself we work on
confidence, motivation, learning and life skills to
get our clients back on the road to employment.

I would recommend the charity to

others. The team really make time to
pay attention to customers, talking to
them and building relationships.

Who we are, what we do

Heres how we
helped Laura:
Laura, from East London, was unemployed for
more than nine years. Guided by her coaches
and advisers, Laura was successfully placed into
work, and now works as an office administrator
for First Step Training and Development.
Laura: As a single, full-time mother caring for
twin sons, working while tending to my family
responsibilities was incredibly difficult. So, when
the boys were young, I dedicated my time and
energy to looking after my family.
When the time came to return to work, the gaps
in my employment history were problematic and
I was referred to CDG.
My adviser improved my confidence. She
supported me with job applications and enrolled
me on various training courses, including a food
and hygiene course with a view to improving
my chances of successfully applying for any
catering roles that came up. She also helped
to hone my interview skills, guiding me and
developing my interview techniques. After being
out of work for so long, the ability to sell myself
to employers was important.
I got the role Im currently in after my adviser
sent my CV to the employer and I was invited
for an interview. I now work as an office
administrator, and I work Monday to Wednesday.
My colleagues are very flexible, allowing me
to move the days I work depending on whats
going on at home, and we work in a familyoriented atmosphere.
I did start to lose heart in the last year or two,
doubting whether I would get back into work,
and now Im back, I love it!

Work Choice
Shaw Trust is the governments prime provider
in 16 of the 22 contract package areas (CPAs)
for Work Choice, the governments specialist
employment programme for people who may
struggle to find or stay in work due to disability, or
who face health problems or impairments, and a
subcontractor in a further six CPAs.
Over the last three decades, weve become
specialists in understanding the obstacles faced
by people with a disability or disadvantage
such as physical and mental health problems,
learning difficulties, addiction, crime and social
circumstances as well as how to overcome
them.
We treat every client as an individual and build a
tailored package of support for the journey back
to employment. Once in employment, we provide
in-work support for both the client and employer.
Its an approach that works.
Shaw Trust is a prime
provider in 16 out of 28
Work Choice areas.
We provide Work
Programme services
on behalf of JHP (in
Swindon and Westonsuper-Mare), G4S (in
North East Yorkshire
and Humberside) and
Serco (in areas of West
Midlands) and are a
subcontractor in six Work
Choice areas.
CDG delivers the prime
contract for London East
and, in alliance with
MAXIMUS, contracts in
London West, Hampshire
and the Isle of Wight. It
is also a subcontractor to
Avanta in Crawley.
CDG jointly owns CDG
WISE Ability, the prime
Work Choice provider in
Hampshire and the Isle
of Wight. CDG itself is a
subcontractor.

I really enjoy work now and my

employers are very supportive. Ive
moved into a house with my partner
and were thinking about having a
family. Were also going on holiday
abroad this year. We wouldnt be able
to do any of this if I wasnt working.

It worked for Jo:

Jo has a physical disability called hemiplegia,
which results in muscle weakness. Lack of
understanding in the workplace made her resign
and doubt whether shed ever work again. But
after training and confidence-building through
Work Choice, shes not just found a job she loves,
shes planning a family and her first overseas
holiday.
Jos condition made work as a cleaner very
challenging, especially without the right support
from her employers. After being out of work for six
months, and with confidence at an all-time low,
she was referred to our Work Choice programme.
Our adviser worked one-on-one to raise Jos selfesteem and increase her employability skills. She
also learned important jobsearch techniques and
joined our job club.
After several applications, Jo was thrilled to be
offered a cleaning operative position in Taunton.
We worked with her manager to adjust her
work schedule so she could gradually grow in
confidence. We also bought Jo a vacuum to
make work easier. And were pleased to say she
recently passed her first unannounced quality
audit with flying colours.

Volunteering
Our volunteer initiative provides extra
support to help people back into work or
into employment for the first time. Launched
in 2011 by CDG, it enables people to share
their skills and experience and complements
the support staff give to jobseekers, both
before they find employment and once they
are in a job.
Following the merger with CDG, Shaw Trust
is looking at how the scheme can expand to
connect mentors and job-seekers across its
national network to further support the delivery
of contracts such as Work Programme and
Work Choice and also grow and develop further
the skills and learning offered through our
projects.
Our volunteers come from a variety of
backgrounds and with diverse skills, like
Phillip. Having enjoyed a long career in the
City (London) working in investment banking

and advising companies on financial matters,

Phillip now volunteers three mornings a month
to support jobseekers at the charitys Brixton
centre to help guide them into employment.
Phillip: I was enthused by the charitys
practical and intellectual take on volunteering,
particularly when compared to the manual
approach adopted by other organisations.
I was delighted to put my skills to good use
and take advantage of my qualifications and
work experience to provide extra guidance to
jobseekers.
I spend up to an hour with each jobseeker and
usually meet up to three in a morning. I help
them with their paperwork, try to ensure their
CVs contain the relevant facts presented in the
right way to possible interviewers. I might also
help draft cover letters or provide advice on
presentation skills, including basic tips.

Volunteering for CDG was

very appealing to me as I felt I
would be able to use my skills
and the tools I developed over
my career to help jobseekers.

Bedri, volunteer
Ive found volunteering to be a very
rich experience. Its a rewarding
way to make use of your time and
I would recommend it to as many
people as possible.

Who we are, what we do

Retail

Working here gave me focus. I

was as low as you could go, but
coming here helped.

Shaw Trust runs around fifty charity shops

in England and Wales, stocking a wide range
of items that have been donated for resale.
All our shops are staffed by a dedicated group
of volunteers and Shaw Trust staff. The income
raised from our shops goes to projects that
support disabled and disadvantaged people in
local communities.
Our shops also help develop our clients
employability skills through work experience
and work placements. They provide a safe and
supportive environment for clients to develop
confidence, learning and skills.
Margaret volunteers at the Devizes shop and
offers her invaluable services to ensure the
outlet continues to play an important role in the
local community.
This shop has always been a social centre
where people in the community can come in
and socialise, and its a welcoming place for
them to meet people.
It helps to have a friendly place like this in the
area; a place widely seen as the best charity
shop around. People usually leave here with a
smile on their face.

Margaret has a strong personal connection

with Shaw Trust. The charity helped her to deal
with the challenges of her life, having lost her
eldest son to illness while contending with a
series of other personal tragedies. However,
after being given the opportunity to work at the
Devizes retail store, Margarets mood gradually
improved.
Without the people who work here, I would
be in desperate straits. I had a great deal of
tragedy in my life a few years ago; I lost my
eldest son and my younger son fell ill. I was as
low as you could go, but coming here helped.
The people would listen if I wanted to talk, and
if I didnt they would give me space. Without this
place I would not have survived. It gave me a
focus.

Learning and skills

Our work is about improving the working

lives of people who face disadvantage, and
supporting them to learn skills and gain
qualifications is the foundation for securing
employment and developing a career.
We help people gain qualifications through
specialised programmes, and for those seeking
work we link this to support in jobsearch skills,
interview practice and practical help to enter
employment.
Shaw Trusts understanding of the learning
needs faced by disabled and disadvantaged
people allows us to design and deliver tailored
learning programmes in local communities. We
help clients address their circumstances such

as a criminal record or learning disability and

gain a wide range of life skills, employability
skills and sought-after qualifications.
A large part of our learning and skills provision
is aimed at helping 16-to-24 year olds who
are not in education, employmentor training
(NEET). We help them build the skills and
confidence they need to realise their potential.
And we back this up with a wide range of
practical advice and support, such as work
experience, job matching and ongoing mentor
support.

Emma
Emma has learning disabilities and had
been out of work for two years. She joined
Work Choice in 2011 and completed a work
placement at Oaklea Nursing Home, where
she was offered a full-time job. Shes now also
studying for an NVQ level three in childcare.

I am proud of everything Ive achieved. I left school with

no qualifications but Shaw Trust and Oaklea have given me
the confidence to believe in myself.

Who we are, what we do

10

Curtis
Curtis had lost direction since school,
experiencing problems with confidence and
self-esteem. By getting involved in Shaw
Trust workshops and activities as part
of the charitys NEET provision, he soon
rediscovered his passion and potential.
Now Curtis is employed with Halfords and
hungry for more success.
After going through a tough time in his personal
life, Curtis was spending most of his time
at home playing video games and feeling
increasingly gloomy about his prospects. He
heard about Shaw Trusts Stepping Forward
programme, just down the road in Widnes, and
decided to give it a go.
The programme lasted for 18 weeks and Curtis
received tailored help to boost his employment
skills, social development and self-belief. This
included trips to museums, skills workshops
and courses to encourage responsibility.

I didnt really like myself before but

Shaw Trust has helped me feel a lot
better about myself. I know what I want
from life my future goals are to work
hard and continue being happy.

Soon he felt confident enough to apply for a

placement at his local Halfords and was offered
part-time work. Curtis is enjoying the challenge
and is 100 per cent focused on turning it into a
permanent position.

Ofsted rated our learning and skills provision Good in the North, North East and Sussex.
Programmes meet learners needs well.
Learners can choose from a good range of
accredited and non-accredited provision and
vocational options. The Trusts partnership
arrangements are excellent.

It has extensive links with local authority

services, training providers, charities, support
agencies and the community, enabling very
effective collaborative working which benefits
learners.

Community enterprises and projects

Shaw Trust runs a range of enterprises and
projects many of which are open to the
public across sectors including catering,
recycling and horticulture.
These initiatives are firmly embedded in our
local communities and provide our clients with a
broad range of learning and skills development
as well as employment opportunities.
Those we support benefit from a range of
initiatives including access to accredited training

on-site, work experience and employment,

supervisory roles and core learning such as
numeracy, literacy and IT skills.
Our focus is now on aligning every project
to employability whether that be work
experience, vocational training or stepping
stone employment opportunities and building
strong links with contracts such as Work Choice
and Work Programme.

When I first started I didnt have many skills

but Ive learned a lot about plants although
sometimes I cant remember all the names.

Craig
When Shaw Trust took over the running of
Palmer Gardens back in 1984, the purpose
was to help local people who may not be
suited to other kinds of employment learn
gardening skills, build their confidence and
feel part of the community, and today this
mission remains the same.
Craig has channelopathy, which affects his
nervous system. I enjoy it [at Palmer Gardens]
and have made loads of friends. When I first
started I didnt have many skills but Ive learned

remember all the names, he explains. The

support Palmer Gardens has given Craig has
not only helped him, but has also impacted on
his family life. My mum is really pleased that I
come here, he says.
Palmer Gardens recently celebrated a hundred
years of being a community project. It was
opened in 1912 by George Palmer, to educate
local school children in horticulture. During
World War II the gardens grew vegetables for
the Dig For Victory campaign, and it was used
as a demonstration garden for the county.

Employers
CDG has been working with Premier Inn
since July 2011.
Weve been very pleased with the quality of the
people CDG has referred, and Karen [employer
relationship manager] is a pleasure to deal with.
Weve introduced the charity to other areas of
the business too, and over the last six months
have placed 25 jobseekers at our Waterloo,
Victoria, Kings Cross and Greenwich sites. One
particular individual started three months ago
and shes been promoted twice in that time.

Health
Poor health is a major barrier to work. Many
of our clients come out of employment due
to health problems or because they have
been unable to sustain their role due to a
reduced work capacity.
With support, many of our clients can manage
their physical and mental health conditions and
return to work. With guidance and practical
advice, many employers are able to realise the
potential of their existing employees.
One in four of people will experience mental ill
health in the course of a year and Shaw Trust
works to break down prejudice, remove barriers
and facilitate productive and fruitful working
relationships for both our clients and their
employer.

Shaw Trust uses a blend of in-house expertise

through our vocational rehabilitation and
condition management services, as well as
using specialist partner services to ensure
individuals referred to us are able to fully benefit
from the range of local community services
available.
We create personalised plans, transitional
services and in-work support to help build
confidence and skills, so our clients can reenter the workplace or sustain an existing role.

Matthew
Matty had mental health, personal and
learning barriers to finding work. He also
had no qualifications and no employment
history. But with determination and the right
support, hes fulfilled his goals of finding
work, securing accommodation for himself
and his partner and owning his first
motorbike.
Being severely dyslexic, Matty had always
battled with confidence and learning. When
we met him, he had ADHD (attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder) and was an ex-offender
living in a remote rural area, which made finding
work more challenging.
His Shaw Trust adviser quickly tailored an
action plan, including training and voluntary
work to increase life and work skills and selfesteem. With practical support for his dyslexia,
Matty also re-engaged with education, and his
health issues were addressed with treatment
and medication.

Who we are, what we do

Shaw Trust helped me to set short, medium

and long term goals, gain educational
qualifications for the first time in my life.
I have left the benefits system behind and am
now a happier person, living independently. I
really appreciate all the help.

These interventions proved life-changing. He

gained his first qualifications and, with structure
and purpose to his life, he also felt confident
and motivated to work.
Feeling more empowered, he worked even
harder at his jobsearch skills until a one-month
trial as a kitchen porter became a permanent
position. Matty celebrated by passing his
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) bike test, and
buying his first motorbike.

at The Christie, that a referral was made by

the lead counsellor to Stephen Wallwork at the
Shaw Trust vocational rehabilitation scheme.
John became Shaw Trusts six hundredth client
and the charity supported him with specialist
guidance to develop his CV and job application
skills.

Getting this job has really changed my

life, thanks to the support of Stephen
and all his encouragement. I really cant
thank everybody enough for their help
with finding me a job.

John
59-year-old John was diagnosed with
prostate cancer in 2010. On the same
day. he was to receive further news that
his mother had passed away, and this
would be the catalyst for some major
changes to his life.
Johns doctor arranged a provisional
referral to The Christie hospital in
Manchester, where he was to have surgery
and follow-up treatment. In May 2010 John
had his operation. He felt that hed lost
everything and his confidence had taken a
considerable knock.
It wasnt until John recognised that he
needed help and made the brave step to
engage with the psycho-oncology service

John was motivated by the commitment and

enthusiasm of his case manager to consider
voluntary work, but in the meantime an
opportunity came up for a delivery driver position
working twenty hours a week, John was an ideal
candidate and was pleased when he received
a call to confirm he had been successful. The
role meant his financial situation significantly
changed; he had previously been refused
benefit so was using his small amount of
savings to live on.

The Shaw Trust project based at The Christie

has played an extremely valuable role. Its
work for our patients in helping them to
stay in or get back to work, in linking together
service provision, in working with employers
has given support during and after diagnosis,
treatment and into recovery.
The reassurance, advice and guidance they
provide has been an excellent additional
support to enhance health and wellbeing.

Christie NHS Foundation Trust

Partnerships
Shaw Trust combines a wide range of
specialist programmes and services to meet
the individual needs of the people we are
here to help.
Partnership priorities for the year ahead include
the ongoing development of our diverse supply
chain partners. Work is underway to gather
feedback from our partners on how we can
support them, which ensures we continually
evolve and provide a first-class service to our
clients.
To verify the effectiveness of our supply chain
management weve committed to undertaking
an assessment of the newly-merged charity
against the Merlin Standard later this year.
We will also focus on developing new
relationships with organisations working in
the criminal justice sector in advance of the
Transforming Rehabilitation competition.

Although we are the UKs largest third sector

provider of employment opportunities for the
Department for Work and Pensions, Shaw
Trusts international operations and partnerships
have also grown as a result of our consistent
high performance and approach to finding
unique and innovative employment solutions for
the people we work with.
In addition to our work across the UK, we
operate in partnership with Intergracja in
Poland, Motivation in Romania and Interwork in
Australia, which we merged with in September
2009.
Shaw Trust is also a member of several
international networks including Workability
Europe, Workability International and
Rehabilitation International.

Who we are, what we do

From the chief executive

When you work for a charity like Shaw
Trust, it is impossible not to be constantly
reminded of why we do what we do and why
our charity exists.
More pertinent than any other reason, however,
is the feeling we achieve when weve helped
people like those weve highlighted here find
a job or impact on their lives in other ways.
I say our charity because, in the spirit of
our vision a society in which everyone has
the opportunity for employment, inclusion
and independence Shaw Trust belongs
to everyone. It belongs to the hundreds of
dedicated and skilled volunteers who so
generously give up their time to support people
into employment. And it certainly belongs
to our hard-working and committed staff
members, many of whom demonstrate sheer
professionalism and devotion to their tasks on a
daily basis.
But most of all, Shaw Trust belongs to the
individuals we are all here to support, whatever
their background, needs or circumstances, and
this publication is testament to that. Of course,
we can only achieve our aims by working well
with others, and our terrific supply chain plays a
huge part in any success we enjoy.
Together we have laid invaluable foundations
that will allow us to approach the future with
confidence and provide the tools to work
towards success, but we also know we can
never be complacent about the task in hand.
Having recently celebrated our thirtieth
anniversary, we are more conscious than ever
of the goals we need to meet to ensure we
can continue helping people into work for the
next thirty years, and the merger with Careers
Development Group has brought those aims
sharply into focus.

The people featured here provide a fantastic

incentive to meet those goals because every
day, right across the UK and between more
than 1,400 of us who work for our charity, we
have a tangible opportunity to really change
peoples lives.
With the direction lent by the charitys corporate
objectives and our three main areas of
activity for the short and long term future
employability services, learning and skills, and
the rehabilitation of prison leavers we know
we have to make the most of that opportunity
and use our knowledge and expertise to deliver
services that reach and help as many people as
possible.
As a charity with a commercial brain but a
charitable heart, Shaw Trust is in a great
position to do that.

Roy OShaughnessy,
chief executive
