QUOTE FOR THE MONTH

WHAT GREAT THING WOULD YOU ATTEMPT IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD NOT
FAIL ?

Welcome to a new year and hopefully a great year of turning. Thanks for everything that
you all did during the year to make the meetings each month worth waiting for.
Great to see a good turnout on Tuesday and great to have a new face along to see what we
do.
As you will see from this months cover photo this is what I believe the club should be a
great place to meet and chat.It is not just about the turning. It is a great chance to swap ideas
and see what everyone has been up to.
Thanks to all who turned up on Monday for the day it was greatly enjoyed and you get heaps
done that 3 hours on our normal nights fails to achieve.
I and others who were eagerly awaiting Stuarts start at the finish demo were given a
masterclass in the art of finishing and the standard has now been set as the pictures below
reveal which are both from Stuart and were joint winners of the Syd Mattsen Peoples Choice
award this month.
The photos really do not do the finish justice as those who were present will verify.

The master invited members to have a go and thanks to Veronica for jumping at the chance.
Stuart does not power sand prefering to let the spinning lathe do the work for him. He used
both a combination of hand and mandrel sanding running right through to 1200 grit paper.

The foam backing used in the photo above also was another technique we saw.I have to
admit that Stuart showed beautiful turning skill with the bowl gouge in the leadup to his
sanding. The better your tool work .the easier your finishing will be.A note to remember if
you don't already.

Next months demo will be another to look forward to with New to the skew featuring
another master that being Alan Weale. It must have been a night for it because Alan won the
Turner of the month award with this multi centre turned piece. What I found great was also
the honesty with which he showed his previous attempts and explain the difficulty involved.
A word of warning the demo will also involve some hands on to those who wish to get
involved.Don't be scared.

Another photo from monday shows Alan giving John West a few pointers on the use of our
sharpening jig.Thats what we are all about .helping each other .Remember if there are things
you want to know or help with all you need to do is ask.

We now have 2 lathes which will accomidate larger work thanks to Colin and John Moffatt
in helping me to put Syds outrigger on another lathe. Just a warnig Please check the speed if
you use them before turning on the lathe as if someone has been doing spindle turning
before you swivel it , 3500 rpm for a large work will certainly cause carnage to both you or
anything in near vacinity.
We have info for the N Z Woodturning symposium from Dick Veitch for all who are
interested .It is a we way off and I will keep you posted on any new developments.
Hopefully you will all be able to get the newsletters from now on on our website. Thanks to
Simon for his ongoing work in this cause and also to Brendon wherever you are for getting
the ball rolling. It will be great to see you back when time permits.
So to everyone keep turning and remember to bring along what you do as it helps others
when we have variety.

Thanks Ed.

JOKE OF THE MONTH.

I didn't realise how much my wife loved me until I was off work for a few days with the
flu.She was so thrilled to have me in the house that everytime the Postman or Milkman
called , she'd run out into the street shouting , ' My husbands at home ' My husbands at
home.
HOT OFF THE PRESS
Just a late one but a good one.I have just been informed that Fergus McEwen who is a club
member who most off us know especially those who have won one off his laminated
chopping boards in the raffle as I have on two occasions has just reached the milestone of
ninety years of age [ not that he shows it ]. So from me and the rest of the club well done
Fergus..
