The Caravel
Small ship with high sides and wide bottom
this made it stable on the sea crossings and
could navigate shallow waters
It had a triangular sail, called a lateen sail
this allowed the boat to sail, in a zig zag
pattern, up wind.
It had a sternpost rudder (a rudder at the
back) this made it easier to steer

The Astrolabe

The Astrolabe
Was an Arab invention
By aiming the pointer at the Sun or North
Star, you can read its height from the horizon
Using this information they could calculate the
ships latitude

The
Compass

The Compass
Introduced to Europe from China
Consists of a small box filled with water or oil
with a floating magnetic needle on top
The compass allowed them to read which
direction North was
A main advantage was that it could be read in
any weather and at night as well as daytime

The Portolan

The Portolan
Portolans were navigation charts (maps), that
were often bound like a book
They described coastlines and identified
ports
This helped them to travel along the correct
course
They also helped to locate ports and navigate
coastlines

Why do these things matter????

Made navigation MUCH easier
Allowed people to explore with less risk, and less
time wasted
