Conductivity Lesson
Goal: to teach students about conductivity and how it occurs
make sure to include:
heat
electricity
semi-conductors vs. non-conductors

what makes something conductive

Conductivity Lab
Lab Overview:
1: Heat water until very warm. (not hot)
2: Pour an even amount of water into each cup
3: Stick an equal amount of a cold slice of butter onto one end of each stick.
4: Place the other end of the stick into the warm water, with the side with the butter
leaning against the wall of the cup, and the butter out of the water.
5: Have students in groups of four, each group with their own experiment and a timer.
6: Have students use a timer to time the amount of time it takes for the butter to melt
and begin to slide.
7: Have students record the amount of time for each material to melt in a data table.
8: Have students reflect on why they think some of the sticks made the butter melt
faster.

Materials needed (Per Group):

popsicle stick
plastic stick
copper stick
steel stick
aluminum stick
water
heat source
5 cups
stopwatch

Atoms and Bonds Lesson

Goal: Teach students a basic understanding of atoms and bonds
Make sure to include:
Protons, neutrons, electrons
atom structure
chemical bonds
the concept that atoms make up everything
tie it to periodic table lesson

Chemical Bonds/ Molecule Building Lab

Materials:
Balls1" diameter
12 carbon (black),
12 nitrogen (blue),
12 oxygen (gray),
16 hydrogen (yellow),
Bonds
30 1"-length wooden pegs
10 2"-length springs

Lab Overview: Walk Students Through the Following Steps

1. Carbon (represented by a black ball) can bond to 4 other atoms. Choose a black ball and
insert 4 sticks into its holes (The black ball has only 4 holes)
2. Nitrogen (represented by a blue ball) usually bonds to 3 other atoms in molecules. Choose a
blue ball and insert sticks into 3 of the holes in the ball.
3. Oxygen (represented by a red ball) usually bonds to 2 other atoms in molecules. Choose a
red ball and insert 2 sticks into it. (The red balls have only 2 holes)
4. Hydrogen (represented by a yellow) can bond to 1 other atom. Choose a yellow ball and
insert a stick into it. (The yellow balls have only 1 hole)
5. In groups, instruct the students to build the following:

O2 CO2 C2H4 C2N2H4O2

Molecule Building Lab

1. A question I have about this lab is..

2. What do you think the balls represent? Why are they different colors

Data:

Draw Ethylene molecule:

Conclusion questions:

1. What are molecules? What are atoms?

Conductivity Worksheet
Conductivity is the ability of an object to heat things up.

Does it melt
the butter?

How fast does

it melt?

Does it slide
down the

object?

3.What are atoms?

4.Draw a molecule that you built.

5.What is the periodic table? What is it for?

Periodic Table Lesson Plan

The periodic table is really difficult to teach to kids, especially the various trends
and patterns that occur throughout it. Following the plan are links and resources to
aid the lesson and to help the kids understand the lesson further as well as some
just for fun.
Begin by introducing elements. Explain that they are pure substances made of
things called atoms, and that all of the atoms in elements are the same. The
elements are organised into something called the Periodic Table of the Elements.
Give the students the puzzles, and have them assemble them the best they can.
Display the actual Periodic Table and explain that the elements are organized into
different families based on their characteristics. There are many different families,
notably the metals, metalloids, nonmetals, and noble gases (there are others if
you would like to expound).

The Periodic Table is also broken up

into blocks. Explain that these blocks
help to order the table and allow us to
find an elements address on the
periodic table. There are the s-block, pblock, d-block, and f-block.
