ACT SCIENCE TEST TACTICS & SUGGESTIONS

ACT SCIENCE GAME PLAN!
step #1: Pay attention to purpose, method, and results of
experiment
Step #2: Interpret variables + patterns in figures
independent/dependent variables
hypothesis, experimental control
BE TRENDY >>> look closely for connection between
variables and graphs/charts
Step #3: Scan the answer choices + find support in passage
remember: do not rely
solely
on previous knowledge; however,
do not fully suspend it either because it might help you
make a smarter educated guess

TIPS:
1. Do the conflicting viewpoints passages
last
2. For data representation & research summary passages, read just
enough to be able to answer this one question:
a. data rep: What is the basic topic of the tables/charts? (focus on
trends)
b. research summary: What is the basic topic and purpose of the
experiment? (focus on method of experimenting and similarities/
differences between different methods; also glance over the
results/ numbers and data in the charts and try to draw a
picture in your head of how they are related)
3. Spend about 4 min on each data rep passage, 5 min on research
summary passage, and 6 min on conflicting viewpoints passage.

4 min * 3 passages = 12 min

5 min * 3 passages = 15 min
6 min * 1 passage = 6 min
33 minutes total
( 2 min buffer time)

( helpful if you have to come back later to this question)
Unlike for the reading section, these tricks can all be implemented at
once by just keeping them in mind while reading the passages and
graphs.
