1. Thought it wouldn’t take long, looked forward to a victory.


2. The North had a large population, more money/technology, money, and more farms.
3. They lacked military leaders—1/3 went to the South.
4. It was large, and the coastline was hard to blockade. They also had the social aspect—they
thought they were going to win.
5. Whoever controlled the Mississippi had the power. They had few factories, and cotton trade
could be cut off.

JD grew up on a plantation, had access to better education, military training, had military
experience, held cabinet position under Pres. Pierce.
AL was poor, did not settle on career until 30s, little schooling
7. The Anaconda Plan
- surround and blockade the South
- split the Confederacy in two
- capture the capital at Richmond; destroy the gov’t
8. When men went off to war, women took on leadership roles, acted as the head of the
household, worked in factories, became nurses, teachers, and government workers.
9. They became messengers, guides, scouts, smugglers, soldiers, spies, and worked in military
hospitals.
10. The “angel of the battlefield” was Clara Barton, founded the American Red Cross.
