CEE 11 Lab #1 (Due in EEE Dropbox by 11:55pm Monday, Week 5)

Instruction: First attach a small object (for example a wrap of scotch tape) to the head of a coin.
Then throw it for 50 times. Record the side that is up.
H=head, T=tail
Q1. Toss the coin for 50 times and record your observations in the following table:

Q2. We define a random variable X as 1 if the outcome is head and 0 if the outcome is tail. List the
observed values of X, x, from the table in Q1. Calculate the sample mean, sample variance, and
sample standard deviation.

Q3. If the coin is fair; i.e., if the probability of getting a head is 0.5, what is the pmf of X, p(x)?
Show the pmf with (1) a tree diagram, (2) table, and (3) histogram.

Q4. Following Q3, what is the CDF, F(x)? Plot it.

( < 0) = ( < 0) = 0
(0 < 1) = ( = 0) = 0.5
( 1) = ( = 1) + ( = 0) = 0.5 + 0.5 = 1
