Catalog Description
Comprehensive introduction to studio ceramics including: hand-building techniques;
introduction to throwing, various surface techniques such as the use of oxides, glazes,
and slip. Instruction will include various firing techniques including oxidation, reduction,
and raku.
Curricular Relationships
May be used as a required course for all Art Education and Art majors. Ceramics may
also be used as an option for an Art Minor as an elective in general studies.
Objectives
The key objective is creative expression, you will be expected to:
1. Create unique, personal, finished objects in clay.
2. Perform a critical examination and assessment of your own work, as well as the
work of others.
3. Articulate how your work moved from the initial concept to the final product by
recognizing and using visual arts as a form of communication.
4. Analyze and evaluate the characteristics, merits and meaning of work of art.
5. Demonstrate basic ability in hand-building, throwing and decorative techniques.
6. Acquire a basic knowledge of clay and glaze technology and apply it to their work.
7. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of firing techniques.
8. Develop the ability to effectively analyze ceramics works in writing.
9. Demonstrate creative and aesthetic growth.
