Population: about 500000
Palestinians.
Gaza's history of habitation dates back
5,000 years, making it one of the
oldest cities in the world.

Early History

important stopover on

It was first mentioned
by the bible, as it was
the

where
Samsonwas imprisoned
by the Philistines and
met his death.

the beginning of history, Gaza


has been dominated by several
different peoples and empires.

Romans, Byzantines, Islamic Empire,
Crusaders, Ottoman Empire.British

the Palestinians

Gaza Landmarks

Great Mosque of Gaza

Built

in 1340, frequently renewed.


According to tradition, it is built on the
remains of an ancient Philistinetemplewhich
great Samson destroyed by his own hands.

Church of Saint Borvirios of the


Roman Orthodox

Gaza

city is the home to the third oldest church in Palestine


after the churches of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Holy
Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the Church of Saint Parvirios was built
in the fourth century AD.

Museum of Bashas Palace

by Mamluksultan in the mid-13th century.
