1.3 A pump develops a total head of 50 ft of water under a given operating condition. What
pressure is the pump developing in SI units and terminology?
Solution:
1 in w.g. = 249.08 Pa
Then,
12 in 249.08 Pa 1 kPa
= 149.45 kPa
Pressure = (50 ft )
1 ft 1 in. w.g . 1000 Pa
1.4 A fan is observed to operate with a pressure difference of 4 in. of water. What is the pressure
difference in SI units and terminology?
Solution:
1 in w.g. = 249.08 Pa
Then,
249.08 Pa
= 996.32 Pa
Pressure = (4 in. w.g.)
1 in. w.g .
1.5 Compute the heat transferred from water as it flows through a heat exchanger at a steady rate
of 1 m3/s. The decrease in temperature of the water is 5 C, and the mean bulk temperature is
60 C. Use SI units.
Solution:
1.6 Make the following volume and mass flow rate calculations in SI units. (a) Water flowing at
an average velocity of 2 m/s in nominal 2 in., type L copper tubing. (b) Standard air
flowing at an average velocity of 4 m/s in a 0.3 m inside diameter duct.
-2-
1. Introduction
Solution:
(a) Table C-2, 2 in, type L copper tube.
ID = (62.61 mm)(1 m / 1000 mm) = 0.06261 m
D = 0.06261 m
V = 2 m/s
= 1000 kg/m3.
Volume flow rate:
Q& = AV = D 2V
4
2
Q& = (0.3) (4 ) = 0.282743 m3/s.
4
Mass flow rate:
m& = Q& = (1.115 kg/m3)(0.282743 m3/s)
m& = 0.3153 kg/s
1.7 A room with dimensions of 3 x 10 x 20 m is estimated to have outdoor air brought in at an
infiltration rate of volume change per hour. Determine the infiltration rate in m3/s.
Solution:
Infiltration rate, Q& = (3 m)(10 m)(20 m)(1/4 / hr)(1 hr / 3600 s) = 0.042 m3/s
1.8 Air enters a heat exchanger at a rate of 5000 cubic feet per minute at a temperature of 50 F
and pressure of 14.7 psia. The air is heated by hot water flowing in the same exchanger at a
rate of 11,200 pounds per hour with a decrease in temperature of 10 F. At what temperature
does the air leave the heat exchanger?
Solution:
q& = m& a c pa (t a 2 t a1 ) = m& wc pw (t w1 t w 2 )
t w1 t w 2 = 10 F
c pw = 1.0 Btu/lbm-F
m& w = 11,200 lbm/hr

1.9 Water flowing at a rate of 1.5 kg/s through a heat exchanger heats air from 20 C to 30 C
flowing at a rate 2.4 m3/s. The water enters at a temperature of 90 C, and the air is at 0.1
Mpa. At what temperature does the water leave the exchanger?
Solution:
q& = m& wc pw (t w1 t w 2 ) = m& a c pa (t a 2 t a1 )
c pw = 4.187 kJ/kg-C

Air at a mean temperature of 50 F flows over a thin-wall 1 in. O.D. tube, 10 feet in length,
which has condensing water vapor flowing inside at a pressure of 14.7 psia. Compute the
heat transfer rate if the average heat transfer coefficient between the air and tube surface
is 10 Btu/hr-ft2-F.
Solution:
q& = hA(t w t a )
h = 10 Btu/hr-ft2-F
t a = 50 F
t w = temperature of condensing water at 14.7 psia = 212 F
A = DL = (1/12 ft)(10 ft) = 2.618 ft2.
q& = (10)(2.618)(212 50) = 4,241 Btu/hr
1.11
Repeat Problem 1-10 for air at 10 C, a tube with diameter 25 mm, a steam pressure of
101 kPa, and a tube length of 4 m, and find the heat transfer coefficient in SI units if the
heat transfer rate is 1250 W.
-4-
1. Introduction
Solution:
q& = hA(t s t a )
q& = 1250 W
t a = 10 C
t s = steam temperature at 101 kPa = 100 C
A = DL = (0.025 m)(4 m) = 0.3142 m2.
q& = 1250 = h(0.3142)(100 10)
h = 44.2 W/m2-C

occurs?
Solution:
q& = m& a c pa (t a1 t a 2 )
