Study of the beam structure with 4 design

parameters
1. Objectifs:
The objective of this study is to propose a structuring and an optimization of the design
problem shown in figure 1.
Initially, the selected dimension of the structure impose that the distance CB is 2L/3; The CD
bar is also in horizontal position and is equal to 60.
In the first part of this study, =0; t=l=0.

B <= 225MPa
FAB <= FB

2. Relations:
First, the angular value of and is:

L

cos ( =

4 L

2 + 3 L

and

cos ( ) =

1 9 27

2 4 L 16 L

The computation of the weight of the structure is defined by:

M = WAB + WCD

with WAB = g e AB t AB L

4 3
and WCD = g e CD t CD L .

Then the maximal stress value is defined by:

The forces are determined as follow:

3. Design variables
t [0.04; 0.10]
WAB [0.04; 0.13]
L [3; 4]

4. Constant parameters
E = 207 E9 Pa
= 7830 kg/ m3
g = 9.81 m/ s2
r = 225 E6 Pa

5. Selection of standard dimension for cross section

It is proposed to structure the design problem, justify your choices and find the various design
variables that optimizes the problem. For this, you have to choose a standard size bar (see the
excel file with all dimensions of profile).

6. Consideration
parameters

of

uncertainties

related

to

design

The position of the bore B has an accuracy of being 5mm. This uncertainty therefore
generates an inclination of the bar (CD), identified by the angles and . In addition, we
consider the tolerances (.l, t) defined in the list of standard profile (excel file)

The distribution of every parameter is supposed to follow a Gaussian distribution.
Perform the same steps as in section 5 (structure the design problem, justify your choices and
find the various design variables) by integrating the parameters of dispersions. Briefly explain
the obtained differences.
