How to Make Your Own Ethernet

 Materials
You will need:
• Ethernet Crimper
Tool
• Ethernet Cable
• RJ-45 End
Connector
• Knife or Snips
 Anatomy of a Crimper Tool
8 Pin Crimper Wire Cutter Wire Stripper

Note that the crimper has two protrusions: one blunt and one with 8 teeth
 Strip Insulation
Using the wire stripper attachment on your crimper tool,
strip off the last inch of insulation on the end of the
ethernet cable.
•Be careful not to cut through the smaller wires inside
•The wire stripper is made for thinner cable so don’t
squeeze it completely closed
•If at any time you need to start over, simply cut the cable
shorter and restart from this step
 Inside an Ethernet Cable
An ethernet wire consists of:
• 4 twisted pairs of wires
– Orange
– Green
– Blue
– Brown
• Plastic piece
– For Support
• Nylon String
– Strain Relief
 Split the Wires
Untwist each pair of wires
Each pair consists of a solid-colored and a white-striped
wire
–Ex. Orange and White/Orange
 Separate and Straighten
Separate the wires and gently bend to
straighten them
The order of wires from left to right:
• White/Orange
• Orange
• White/Green
• Blue
• White/Blue
• Green
• White/Brown
• Brown
 Cut to Correct Length
•Cut the wires straight across
8 Copper conductors
about ½” from the edge of
the blue insulation
•Compare to the connector:
–The wires should extend to the copper
conductors in the connector with the
insulation inserted into the open end

Open end
 Insert into the Connector
Slide the wires into the RJ-45 connector – there
are 8 slots for the wires to fit into
Check the order one last time
White/Orange
Orange
White/Green
Blue
White/Blue
Green
White/Brown
Brown
 Insert Fully
Insert the wires fully into the connector,
ensuring that they touch bottom as shown
below:
 Crimp the End Connector
Insert the RJ-45 connector into the crimper tool,
lining up the copper conductors to the teeth
Squeeze the tool closed to complete your cable
