Permeability Derivation based on Capillary Tube Model

Permeability Derivation based on Capillary Tube

Model
Hagen-Poisseuille Law
Hagen-Poisseuille Law gives,
q = (nr4P)/(8L),
where,
q = flow rate, m3/sec,
n = number of tubes, dimensionless,
r = radius of capillary tube, m,
= viscosity of fluid, Pa*s,
P = pressure drop along the rock sample, Pa,
L = length of sample, m.
In capillary Tube Model of Permeability, every tube is assumed straight, so tube length, l, may substitute sample
length, L.
Thus, we have,
q = (nr4P)/(8l). Eq.1

Combination with Kozeny Equation

n = AL/(r2l), Eq.2
where,
= porosity, dimensionless
Combine Eq. 1 & Eq. 2,
q = Lr2P/(8l2), Eq.3

Combination with Darcy's Law

From Darcy's Law,
q = kAP/(L), Eq. 4
where,
q = flow rate, m3/sec,
k = permeability of the rock sample, m2
A = cross-section area of the sample, m2,
= viscosity of fluid, Pa*s,
P = pressure drop along the rock sample, Pa,
L = length of sample, m.
Combine Eq. 3 and Eq. 4,
k = r2L2/(8l2) = (r2)/(82)),
where,
= tortuosity = l/L, dimensionless.
