GENERAL INFORMATION
A.

Introduction
The CPO (Capacitor Pick-off) measures terminal voltage ripple and is used as a
feedback device and/or as a diagnostic tool. The CPO amplifier amplifies and
buffers the CPO signal. The output is sent to the TPS controller and then routed
to an oscilloscope for display.

There are several options for the CPO place, either flat for use in the end port of
a tank on a single ended machine or, curved plates of various diameter and
radius of curvature to be used on the side ports of a tank.

The CPO signal level varies with CPO plate size and overall accelerator
geometry. To compensate for this, the CPO amplifier has internal gain
adjustments. Please refer to the CPO amplifier manual for specific information.

Each CPO(s) must be matched to a particular CPO amplifier and to a particular

accelerator during installation.

Theory of Operation
The CPO plate is mounted inside the accelerator tank close to the tank wall.
Then exposed to the high voltage terminal, it acts as a capacitive voltage divider
between the terminal and the tank. Any change in terminal voltage produces a
corresponding change in CPO plate voltage, attenuated by the ratio of terminal to
plate capacitance divided by plate to tank capacitance. Because of the large
attenuation factor, the CPO amplifier is used to boost the CPO signal to a
reasonable level.

INSTALLATION
Remove the CPO late prior to installation except for the 1-3/4" diameter flat plate option.
Refer to Drawing No. 2-0-5962.

The housing is designed to be directly bolted on to a flange in the accelerator high

pressure tank. Four bolts secure the 2" ASA flange, compressing a rubber O-ring.

Once the housing is installed, install the CPO plate. Be certain the plate is not shorted
to the tank wall. If it is shorted, use very thin insulating spacers to remove the short.
