BobbyThis is Jerry Gardner class of 66. Would you send out a mass mailing
on my behalf and maybe a note in the newsletter? With all my cross country moves I've lost my high
school yearbook. It would mean a great deal to me. I'll pay including postage. By any chance can it be
found on line? I realize this is an usual request and I hope you can help. Kind regardsJerry
Gardner 1966
Thank you very much for the card. I enjoy the newsletter very much...especially the old pictures of
Hicksville. I am a 1983 graduate and grew up 1 block behind Bethpage Road (and could see Sears from
my bedroom window and the Mid Island Bowl) and would love to see more pictures of the north side of
In this photo, please note the books next to him. He Loved to read. He had a beautiful singing voice, and
he sang a lot. He also whistled...whole songs, in key. One of my earliest memories was of him carrying
me up Ryerson street where we lived. It was a cold night, and the bare limbs of the trees cast eerie
shadows. Frightened, I tucked my head into his shoulder. He whispered in my ear, "Look, the moon." I
looked up and saw the full moon beaming in the sky, making the silica in the brownstone houses
shimmer. I have been watching the moon and the night sky ever since. Thank you, Daddy. For
everything. I love youFran Tallarico1959
Editor notetoday would have been my dads 102nd birthday and is my sister, Eileen Casales, your
classmate, anniversary!
Hi BobI caught your Bayside clip the other day. I also lived in Bayside, I went
to 3 grade there but I dont remember the school. We lived for not quite a year there between the time
we moved out of the house in New Hyde Park and when the house in Hicksville was finished. I dont
remember exactly where but I think the apartments where called Glen Oaks, but not sure. I know it was
across from Alley Pond Park because we walked a couple of blocks to the parkDennis

Look at the photo below. I lived in Springfield Gardens, 223-15 69th Avenue, from 1951 to 1953 and
then across the street from PS46 that was on 218th street from 1953 until we moved to Hicksville in
1955. Alley Pond was just across the street from Springfield Gardens. You probably went to PS46
because that was the only grade school in the area.
The junior high was PS74 Nathaniel Hawthorne Junior Highway and that was around 210th street and
Oceana Parkway.
I played Babe Ruth with Billy Holton who is on my right and his cousin John Reichle on my left.
Thanks BobI'm just having a problem figuring out where I lived I don't remember the street but I do
remember that on one side was alley Pond Park then was are apartments and there was a lot of them and
on the other side were to mid rise apartment buildings and a small shopping center with the subway so
I'm going to have to look on another map thanks anywayDennis
Heres 2 old friends (see below) getting together after 40 years !!! So great, had so much fun!

Hi BobI was touched to see my father name, John Hanifan, (HHS 1939) on the
list of the 1993 Officers of Hicksville Fire Co # 4. My Dad was a volunteer fireman for over 45 years
until his death in 1997. Even as a busy father of 8 children, and holding down multiple jobs to support
his large family, he still found time to give back to the Hicksville community. Thank you for reminding
me of that fact. So proud of him and my Mom (Rita Rettberg Hanifan , HHS 1939) for the values they

p.s. Hi BobAfter reading this months edition of the newsletter, the current picture you have for Lynn
Clock in the reunion video is actually my wife, Wendy Whitson Greguski. We were at the reunion also.
I think you did correct this, I thought I would let you know. BTW, great job on both the reunion &
memorial videos!

Subject: Re: class of 1965 reunion presentation
You did a great job but wanted to let you know that the current picture you show of me is not me. Also,
you mention Laura Trauerts as not being able to attend the reunion but show a picture of her younger
sister Diane. Laura passed away many years ago. Lynn Clock Bammann 1965
You wouldn't believe the hassle trying to match names to faces. I had a list of those who attended from
Elin and went to classmates and Facebook to try to make matches. I sent an appeal twice to the class to
name names from the pictures I couldn't identify. Thought I had it right but obviously not right. Not sure
how I identified your photo. Maybe it looked like you. Do you have a current photo??? I found Trauerts
on Facebook but didn't see Laura as Diane...my bad though they did look alike...sisters!!! No one else
has said anything about being wrong. Guess I'll wait and see who sets me straight. I did screw up on the
In Memoriam but made it right and put up a new video on You Tube. Thanks for your input...love yah
bob
Dear Bob...Hope you enjoyed your holidays. There's a picture of me at the reunion with Tommy
and Susan Sullivan. I guess you could use that picture of me to replace the mystery woman you
originally used. Thanks...Lynn
BobFantastic job! Sorry I missed it; a good turnout after all. A correction on
"those who did not make it though; the "current" photo under my high school yearbook photo is not me!
Attached is a current photo. Thanks for all your effort for HIX alum...Bob Leo 1965
Editor note When I sent out the note asking help for some photos that I couldn't identify, one of
your classmates said the current photo I used was you. Sorry about that. Love the photo of you on the
bikebob
No problem Bob; thanks for the correction. Cannot emphasize how much appreciation I have of your
effortsBob
Bob...Your You Tube Video was very good. Thank you for your

Bob wishing you and your loved ones Peace and happiness along with good health
in the coming year. Wanted to mention you do an outstanding job for you fellow Alumni. Take
careEileen Walter Toscano'59.
During this holiday season, it's so important to give blessings and thoughts to those
who were in our lives and passed. At this age, which many of us, myself included--feel like we are still
30 must take the time to actually realize our mortality....and this list reminds us of the preciousness of
life and how we all have a time that we will leave this earth and our loved ones. It was sad to see some
of our classmates that have passed--some so long ago. Some I can say, "I once knew they passed" but as
memories sometimes fail, it was appreciated to be reminded of "kids" we went to school with who are
now gone. If I find out any others that have passed, I will let you know. Please welcome the holiday
season with the love for family and blessings that we are fortunately still walking this earth with our
future generations for as long as we are lucky enough to do so. Bless You and YoursRochelle

Great job, BB...Absolutely fantastic!! I was really bummed I couldn't make it to the reunion... but you
made it possible by proxy and I thank you. A note: my picture from HS appears in the "unable to attend"
segment. However, the photo below isn't me. She's cuter. LOL
Super job!! Thanks again...Francine Phon Schwartz 1967
Hi Bob...I have nothing to add ( thank goodness) and this list makes me so sad. I
knew quite a few of these classmates...Lois Blanche 1967
Hi Bob, I believe you spelled Arties name wrong, it is Catanzarina. Way too many
have gone!...Jim Bosse 1967
Jim...The Brooklyn Bridge, a pop group from Long Island, New York was made up of a vocal quartet
and a seven-piece band. The quartet was Johnny Maestro the lead singer; the Del-Satins who were
background singers consisting of Fred Ferrara, Les Cauchi and Mike Gregorie. The 7-piece band was
the Rhythm Method including Richie Macioce, Tom Sullivan, Joe Ruvio, Shelly Davis, Carolyn Wood,
Jimmy Rosica and Artie Catanzarita.
Hey Bob...I checked my 1967 year book, you are right. It is Catanzarita. My older sister, Christine
Bosse, 1965 dated a guitar playing Tommy Sullivan. I suspect it was the same one from Artie's band??
Was this Tom Sullivan from HHS class of 1963?

VERY TRICKY ARITHMETIC! NOTE: THIS MUST BE DONE IN YOUR HEAD
ONLY. DO NOT USE PAPER AND PENCIL OR A CALCULATOR. TRY IT.
TAKE 1000 AND ADD 40 TO IT. NOW ADD ANOTHER 1000 NOW ADD 30.
ADD ANOTHER 1000. NOW ADD 20 .. NOW ADD ANOTHER 1000.
NOW ADD 10. WHAT IS THE TOTAL?

After reading the December newsletter sooooo many memories popped into this
aging brain! I was sure I was on my way to "olds heimers" disease!! Mid-Island PlazaSo many
memories ... The pizza placewas it Pizza Supreme had the best pizza for 15 cents a slice and it was
square and thicknot round and thin!!! We use to walk to the plaza from the "A" section on Levittown
Parkway, cross over Old Country to Duffy Ave. where we use to find treasures at the Fiberglass
Factory..Then there was the "haunted house" on Duffy Ave. where I watched Kathy Kocher (64) fall
from a tree only to have the last limb grab her before hitting the ground! There was also Meenan Oil
who let us come in and use their bathrooms.they had the coolest round sink in the middle of the floor
and you stepped on a pedal to get water. hehehehe .. AND the Barrel Factory on Duffy which made
huge cement barrels, we had forts in them and could jump and scale them at ease. Tommy Thogode
(66) had the best fort there. That ended abruptly one weekend when we discovered they had added
Doberman guard dogs once we were already on the groundsthere was some barrel climbing and
jumping that day!!!! No more forts. We also use to play "teen" hide and seek in the furniture dept. in
Gertz on the 4th floor, and I cannot even tell you how many times we stopped the elevator between
floors and had to jump down! We also had our HHS sorority hazing at Mid Island . Kappa Sigma
Kye..Not to forget other Duffy landmarks, Hicks farm with the horses, Sanita Straws and the doll
factory!!! So living in the "A" section crossing over the Duffy to tracks was an exciting venture on the
way to Mid Island!! This newsletter sure does make you bring back a fun walk down memory lane!!
Does anyone else remember any of these locations?? Oh my birthday was Dec. 27th!! Marilyn

In The News
Some interesting info about the KOLA Borehole. It has been exceeded more recently by an oil well
bore in the Mideast, which was then exceeded by another oil well off Russia on Sakhalin Island. Each
was just a few hundred feet deeper than the previous one. The first deep bore hole over 31,000 feet
was in Oklahoma. The KOLA bore hole was planned to go much deeper, however, at its present
depth, the temperature in the hole is over 350 degrees F, which made it not feasible to continue.
Drilling to 49,000 feet would have meant a temperature of over 570F, which would have melted the
drill bits! Perhaps when the world oil begins to run out, they will drill very deep bore holes to tap that
vast energy supply...Bob Gillette
p.s. The borehole finished in 2012 on Sakhalin Island measured 40,604 feet.
I will be the first to admit that this commercial sucks. And, yes, I would give him a great Gibbs to
Dinoso slap at the back of his head. Almost as bad as the Cialis and Viagara commercials that makes
no sense. Why would you look for a bathroom? Should the moment occur, all you need do is swallow
a tablet. It works quickly most times. I know a guy who swallowed one too slowly and got a stiff neck.

Dear Bob and HenryWishing you and your staff at Hicksville Alumni News
the happiest and healthiest 2016! Upon arising on the first day of the new year, I clicked on the
Hicksville Alumni News. Upon scanning the " In Memoriam" section for HHS 1955, I was shocked
to find out I was deceased!!! After pinching myself many times in many areas, I concluded that I was
very much alive and still living in the beautiful Napa Valley, as, I have been for the past 40-plus years
and still enjoying the many great wineries and vineyards and, of course, the great grape juice!!!
Soooooo, please delete my name from the HHS 1955 deceased list. Sadly, in its place please add the
name of my classmate, teammate and friend, Francis W. Barton, who passed away on 11-7-15, in
Syracuse, NY. "Thank you" to you and your staff for all your great work throughout the
yearsSincerelyBob McWilliams 1955

Dear HixNews...Please add Jacqueline( Jackie) Eckler Bove to the In Memoriam list for 1968. Thanks.

I am at a total loss for any explanation as to why I never thought to include my older brother for listing
in the News Letter's 'In Memoriam" section. I have notified the editors of the passing of my younger
brother, Robert Foster class of 1962, my wife, Alice Davidson Foster class of 1959, and a couple of my
classmates of 1957.
My older brother's name was Arthur G. Foster and graduated from Hicksville High in 1950. He had
previously gone to the East Street Elementary School, the Junior High and Senior High on
Jerusalem Avenue. Again for some unknown reason, the name of Art's date at his 1950 Senior Prom has
stuck with me. Her name was Viola Kuberneck (spelling questionable, I think was in the 1950 class
also). Within days of his high school graduation, he volunteered by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. The
Korean War had just started. At the end of his hitch, he attended RPI in Troy, NY and graduated with a
BS in Aeronautical Engineering. He met Evelyn Scarbeck, not a Hicksville resident, at Trinity Lutheran
Church on Nicholai Street in Hicksville and they were married in 1957. Upon graduation from RPI in
1958, Art went to work for Grumman in Bethpage and while there he continued his education and
obtained a Master's as a Professional Engineer. After a decade or so, he left Grumman to go into
business for himself as a PE and successfully stayed with it until his passing. Art and Evie had no
children and lived in Bayshore, L.I., N.Y.
Arthur G. Foster, Class of 1950. passed away on October 16, 1992. Please list him in the "In
Memoriam" section of HixNewsPete Foster, Class of 1957
BobCould you add my sister Martha Canham and my brother-in-law Bill Donlon
to the In Memoriam list for the class of 1956. My sister died 8 years ago. My brother in law died in1988.
I was the youngest of 8 children and because of attrition I only have a brother left, one sister in law and
one brother in law. It is sad but I always think of them. We lost our son in 1998 at age. 29. He had
epilepsy. We have one daughter, a son in law, a granddaughter and a grandson. My daughter is a teacher
and my wife Rita watches the grandkids during the day and after school. One is 7; one is 4. Still work so
we can keep the house. Its worth it to have the grandchildren close to us Hope all is well as can be with
you . Best wishes for a good 2016 Thank youBill Canham 1961

Hi Elin...Received the donation check from the Class of '65 reunion. On behalf of
the Hicksville Vietnam Era Memorial Fund committee, I would like to thank you and my fellow
classmates for the donation. We look forward to making the memorial a reality. Once again, "Thank
you" for putting together a great reunion. I know everyone had a great time. Wishing you and your
family a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year. Best regards...Bill Walden 1965
It would be great to honor Hicksville Alumni who served in the military
during the Vietnam Era. The location of the Memorial has been guaranteed
and will be at the Middle School On Jerusalem Avenue. A plea for donations
has been ongoing for a long, long time. The goal is far away and it would be
great if many who thought about making a contribution would do it soon.
If wanting to contribute, please send a note to Bill Walden saying you want
to see the project succeed
